Um.... isn't the clutch supposed to be backwards?

It sounds like you have the cable too tight. It should be where you tighten it enough to where you should have an 1/8" of play in the pedal.

when you say it wont disengage, you mean that it is hard to get it into gear, right? just want to make sure.

if so, i would make sure you have very very LITTLE freeplay.
clutches, when on their last legs, tend to slip; a totally gone clutch might not disengage.

if you set it up where you have a tiny amount of freeplay or none (make sure it is not slipping, but just preloads the TOB) and with the full pedal travel, you cant get it into gear, i would suspect the clutch itself.
