underdrive pulley info needed

i have an 03 gt with a 5 speed manual. how do i remove the bolt from the middle of the harmonic balancer? the motor wants to rotate and i cant remove the bolt. I have put it in gear but it still rotates. what can I do?

Put the car on the ground, put the transmission in gear and set the parking brake - that should hold it for you.

thanks for the help one problem though the car is in the air all the tires and wheels are off . (doing brake work and putting new bfg kds 1's on it) when i tried last time the brake was not on ill put it on and try it again. thanks.

If it's all up in the air you need an impact to knock it loose.

Put it in 5th and pull the p-brake up high and it may hold it. Be very careful with the car up in the air!

thanks guys . i put the e brake on and that helps but that sucker is tight and i cant get an impact up in there. one question though why fifth gear and not 1st or second?

5th gives the brakes more leverage on the motor.

1st gives you more leverage on the brakes.

I've always been told to use 4th.

Yeah, there could be some transmission gear strength rationale to use fourth gear opposed to fifth. 4th should be enough to do it anyway.
