I recently developed a pretty bad tap in my 1989 5.0 GT convertable. What could be wrong with it and what should be my path of elimination?

I don't know if this would make any difference, but when I filled it up (before this problem) I put 87 Octane. This has occurred ever since I filled up and I am thinking possible detenation or pre-tensing to throwing a rod.

Any help would be appriciated.

Does it make noise at idle or under a load?

I would first check your plugs and make sure your tune up items are up to par.

Then I would take either a wooden broom handle or an automotive stethoscope and put it up to where you think the noises are coming from. Put the other end of the broomstick to your ear and it will amplify the noises and help you pinpoint where it is coming from.
