ok, so i'm thinking about upgrading my axel's. What do you need to get this job done?

Odds are i will be doing this at my freinds house. He has all the air and hand tools that we might need. I'm just trying to think ahead. If i go ahead and buy the 31 spline axles, are their other parts that i need to buy to complete or smooth out this install?

:SNSign: :nice:

yeah, thats what im trying to figure out.... i already have 3.73 gears back there. But the rest is stock. I found a "kit" that does not include the spline diff. Its like 300 bucks or so... its made by "Superior Axle & Gear" have you guys heard of them?

i want to save $$$ but i also want good parts, not crappy stuff that will break. I would rather put out a lil more $$ up front to save a headache later on, ya know?

you will need a 31 spline diff. you will also have to swap out the ABS rings if you have ABS. also you will want to replace all of the bearings and seals. this is also the time to use studs on the caps in the diff and to put on a diff cover and cooler(if you road race). you will also need to have new wheel studs pressed in. you can reuse the gears if you want, however you will have to buy new bolts to attach the ring gear to teh differntial, those are one time use only.

all in all you are looking at about $1200-$1600 depending on the quality of parts.

off of topic bit. But how about just change axle to stronger axle thats 28 spline? i think Moser(Summit PN#MSR-A882841)makes 28splin axle that are forged steel, and much stronger then stock 28 and Superior(Summit PN#SAG-EV81-28)makes 28 splin axle that are made from a super-tough, induction-hardened alloy for like around 250bucks.
I know that 31 is the way to go if you drag race your car all the time. But for what i use my car for, i can't justify replacing carrier. just so that i can get stronger 31 spline axle...

That is what i did, swapped out the stock axles to the mosers 28 spline axles.I figured that i'm not gonna make huge power, and don't plan on using drag slicks besides drag radials, and that is how i based my descission. When the centre section does decide to go,then i will up grade everything then.

on a lot of hte clutch type limited slip diffs, they tend to run very very hot when pushed hard road racing. they run so hot that the clutches give out after 3 or 4 track days. even the carbon fibre 03/04 cobra style ones.

also a lot of pure track cars will have a cooler for the manual trans fluid.

well my car is not road raced, she see's the 1/4 mile track from time to time, and i beat up on her pretty hard on day to day driving...

that cooler is pretty sweeet, but looks like a bit over kill...lol.

anyone else got anything?

thanks for all the post's so far SN!
