bought car a week ago so i dont know the history but it is a 97 4.6 it has a professional products throttle body and intake plenum and k&n filterkit

the noise is all the time sounds like a tensioner of idler squeek. i removed the belt and the noise is still there so that eliminates everything on the front of the motor. appling th clutch makes no difference. the noise is there hot or cold and every rpm. it sounds like it is coming from the drivers upper rear part of the engine like a bad rocker arm roller bushing. i removed that valve cover had my mechanic check all the rockers they were fine, also like to mention i am a ford service manager and none of my mechanics have heard this noise before.

any ideas? could it be the flywheel rubbing the dust plate and the noise just resonating?

thanks to anyone in advance!

also wanted to add the cam looked stock and the noise is like something rubbing or squeeking all the time and it sounds like a really loud supercharger noise, loud enought to hear over the offroad pipe and flowmaster

Maybe one of your pulleys is seizing?

Hmm. The first thing that came to mind was a seizing or oil-starved camshaft bearing. Then again, I always assume the worst when it comes to noises...

You might want to cut the oil filter open and look for metal shavings. If you find any, you've probably got some internal engine issues. Maybe, if you find metal, you can pull the VC off and run the engine at idle and get up close and personal with the valvetrain, seeing if you can isolate the noise. If you suspect it, pop the followers out on that side and pull a cam cap (not both at the same time...) and inspect the journals.

Could it be coming from the power steering pump? I have had those go bad and it did sound like a blower.

shouldn't the noise go away when belt is removed? it's there with belt on or off, no change in sound level- this thing is about to get another motor if i can't figure it out
