My car is currently at a shop getting 275/40/17's mounted on the rear. I have an 87 LX Hatch back on 17X9 Cobra R Replicas.

The manager called me and told me that he has run into a problem. He told me that the right rear tire is rubbing against the rear shock. He told me that he is going to call me back and he has his suspension expert looking at it to see if he can figure something out. What can I suggest he do????

if he means the rear main (vrtical shock, the he's right and you're screwed.
If he means the quad (small diagonal) shock, you can either fip it, or toss it

what jaymac said.

If you have stock control arms I would flip it for now and then get a good set of LCAs and then toss the quad shock. If it is the regular shock then you pretty much are screwed. Sucks to say.

I talked to the technician and advised him to flip them. He didn't know that he could do that but he suggested that I just toss them because the shocks were completely shot anyways. They are probably the original shocks from 1987 is what I'm thinking. He said it may have a little affect on the car when it squats during launch but he said it probably won't hurt it too much.

He did recommend that I replace these quad shocks. Will I be okay without them or would you guys recommend that I replace them? If so, what type of shocks would you recommend. I'm looking to change my suspension completely eventually and I'm wondering if I should start by getting some decent shocks.

I wouldn't bother putting them back on because even the skinny side (piston) is going to rub on a 275. Yes you will need to get lower control arms because the first time you turn and even accelerate normally you are going to get bad wheel hop. The LCAs will not completely eliminate this, but it will be minimal if even noticable.

Without aftermarket upper and lower control arms in place I would want the quads on the car. I until last weekend ran the same tire size with a fliped quad..there was no rubbing at all. Just make sure you take a look at the new style vs. the old...to make sure they are of the same design. Reason I say this is the option to flip the quad will only work if the new quad is of same design style as the original equipment. You can drive the car without the quads, however I've heard the wheel hop can be an issue.

i'm also running the 17x9s with 275/40 rears.my car was originally a 4 banger so it never had quads.i ran it like this for almost a year before i put a better set of control arms and switched to turbo coupe rear.the quads don't do much, just ditch them and upgrade the rear arms when you have the money.
