Forgot this originally- it's an '85 GT 5.0L- I'm pretty sure it was originally automatic, if that helps any

Alright- I was under my passenger side fender chasing vacuum lines- question:
What is the plastic ball, and does it do anything?
And 2- what is the (multiple-solenoid?) metal plate bolted to the back of the fender with lots of vac hoses coming off?
Next up:
What do I do to get rid of the heat riser valve? I've removed the vac lines, but will the manifold bolt back in right without the physical valve? Also, if I go to headers, will this remain?
