vacuum line

Yesterday when I went to leave the house I started the car and all I heard is a very loud sucking sound and the brake pedal is rock hard. So popped open the hood and the large vacuum line going from the brake booster to the firewall was broken. It wasn't just broken though; looked like a firecracker. Missing about a 4 inch part out of it. It was fine when I drove it home the night before so I'm guessing it happened right when I started it. I already replaced the line just wanted to know if anyone knows what could have caused it to completely blow apart like that.

no it was fine when I parked it and was suckin air when I started it. It really runs like crap with a huge vacuum leak! Almost sounded kinda like a wild cam!

No no rats or anything. It could have been on its last leg for a long time- it's probably the original hose from 94. I don't know. But for it to just explode? Odd to me

That is weird. I can't think of anything that would make a vacuum line like that one going to the booster look like a firecracker. Perhaps it was dry rotted and just gave up the ghost under vacuum when you fired it up.

Was the rest of the line vulcanized? Those lines can get hard spots and then they just crack.

No the rest of the line was still flexible. I just noticed today that the vacuum line to the A/C broke again. I wonder if that happened at the same time. That line is shot. It's so brittle it's just like a dry piece of spaghetti.
