Hey all. I am having some kind of valve train noise issues. I recently stroked my 302 to a 331 with AFR 185 heads, steel crank, H beam rods, SRP pistons, Edelbrock RPM Air gap intake, comp cams full roller 1.6 rockers, and long tube Hooker Headers. The first time, i had a comp cams 274 hydraulic flat tappet cam shaft, but i had a lobe go flat not long after i got it running. So i had to pull it back apart to get all the metal out. I didnt want that to happen again, so i had comp cams grind a custom roller cam shaft and got a set of roller lifters. They are the retro fit lifters with the link bar setup. After i got the engine broke in, the engine developed what sounds like a lifter noise, the classic ticking sound. so i re-adjusted them according to comp cams paper that came with the cam shaft which called for 1/2 a turn of pre-load. so i did so, and it still had the noise. I called comp and they said only go 1/16 to 1/8 a turn of pre-load. i did so...still has the noise. i even tried to adjust them with it running and it just changed the rpm range of the noise. Anyone have any ideas....
thanks

Are you sure it isnt just the rockers? Mine sounds like a sewing machine. Most others with comp and crane rockers sound the same.

Is it more prevalent at any given time or is it constant at all times?

now that i think about it, it does kind of sound that way.

it is really prominent at idle and up to about 2000. but you can pretty much hear it all the time. just a little louder at those times.

crap... i thought about that. the problem i have is that i took a stethoscope and listened to both sides trying to pinpoint the location of the problem and it sounded the same on both sides. i even went thru and adjusted them with it running trying to find one that was soft, but they all were the same.

i have exactly the same valve train setup like your´s.
I give preloads 1/8, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and one full turn. The
sewing machine sound is always the same.
I played around with preloads, longer push rods, shorter pushrods, other set of roller lifter and guide plate adjustment since 1 year now.
Furthermore i use the tall frpp aluminium valve covers. Some people say that this covers amplify the sewing sound
Now i let it saw and i ignore it.
Actually 3/4 turn preload.

they are part number 8931-16. when i called comp cams and talked to them the first time, they told me that they only took 1/16 to 1/8 of a turn of pre-load. that is what i have them at now.

yea, i have those same valve covers, the taller ones with the ones with Ford Racing in the top of them. i took it out today and drove it some to try to pick on the little things, it definitely has that sewing machine sound other than that it runs great. what year block are you using, if you don't mind me askin?

Hi,

my block is a late 5.0 HO roller block. And my car run like hell too. No problems. Should i go back to 1/4 turn preload? I don´t know
