very old windshield needs work

I've tried vinegar, glass cleaner, and a few other glass specific cleaners but nothings working. What's the best way to clean a windshield that's very old? This is a coastal car so it is probably a bit of ocean mist layered on there for a while.

Also, I'm sure some of it is also tiny dings simply from road gravel...any way to fill the holes?

There are glass polishes available, but if it's pitted, you will be happier with just installing a new one......

i used mothers aluminum polish and 0000 steel wool. This will get the very stubborn water spot and anything above the surface off, but it wont to anything for pitting or scratches.
