Vibration above 2k ONLY in 5th gear

I just finished my AOD to 5spd swap & I'm getting a really bad vibration above 2k and ONLY in 5th gear. It also only happens when I'm decelerating in 5th gear. I've taken it up to about 3k in 5th with no vibration, but as soon as I let off, all hell breaks loose. It also sounds like vibrating metal, like my exhaust is rubbing something, but it's not. And the metal noise is only in 5th as well.

I did a little test and took my car up to 4500k in 4th, no vibration. I shifted into 5th, went to 2500k & let off, crazy vibrations  I can take it to any RPM in any gear, except 5th, let off the gas & have no vibrations. PLEASE help because I'm ready to drive off a cliff :bang: (even though they don't exsist where I live)

Sounds like either slop in the ring and pinion gear or U-Joints or possibly loose hardware in the drive shaft yoke. It may even be a small imbalance in the driveshaft itself. I doubt that it's in your tranny because it's only happening in 5th. Keep in mind that your driveshaft and everything after it is spinning it's fastest in 5th while everything forward of the driveshaft is spinning slower.

can I use the driveshaft that was originally in my AOD car to test the theory of the driveshaft being bad? When I did the swap I used the d/s from the donor car. I figured that I'd keep the same yoke with the same tranny, since they're worn in together. The AOD & the 5spd looked different. The AOD had a large round "thing" right after the yoke.

I also forgot to mention....the car only vibrates on deceleration not acceleration. AND, if it's vibrating & I push the clutch in & pull it out of gear, the vibrating stops. Then if I push it back in 5th, it'll start vibrating again even with the clutch pedal still depressed.

driveshaft shouldnt matter, i switched over to an aluminum and mine still did it. I am not exactly sure what it is, but u and i are not the first two to have this problem. I dont drive my car anymore its in storage, but I do have an idea that might help. If you take ur shifter boot off and put extra insulation like a second rubber boot around the shifter itself, it might keep it from shaking so much. Also what kind of shifter do u have? It could be a shifter thing. I have a hurst.

This is way too much vibration to be just a shifter thing. I'm talking scary vibrations above 65mph or 2k. Like the whole drivetrain is going to drop out of my car. It still has me confused since I can run up to 4500 in 4th with no problem. I can run that high in 5th too, just when I decelerate.....it's all downhill from there. :(

hm, off topic but hows the difference in that beast?

I'm doing it this weekend, any tips?

it's awesome....breaking in the clutch for 500 miles was the longest 500 miles of my life!! But after that.... Let me tell you, despite all the problems I'm having, it pulls so much harder in 2nd and 3rd than the stock AOD ever did. It's like a completely different car. Just make sure you drain the AOD before you drop it & have a prybar available to pry that beast from the block. Below is what happens when you don't drain it :nonono:
