Vin# question problem

When the inner fenders were replaced 15 or so years ago, they were thrown out without taking the stamped portion off and rewelding it in. you couldn't read the numbers thought the buck tag is all that was needed. The guy I sold it to used the Buck tag to get a rubbing from to title it and that is what I did also. Had no problems. I would like to restamp the vin to the fender. Does anybody know the size of punches that would be needed? I am thinking 5mm would be about right, but am unsure.

3/8", but there was also a star stamped before and after the number. Were the aprons from the firewall to the shocktower replaced as well? The passenger side has a VIN stamped in it under the fender and some driver's side rear apreons had it stamped as well. I am assuming you are talking 65-66.

It is an early 67. I didn't replace the rear on either side as they were then and still are in pretty good shape. Not rusted, except for the circle at the top of the drivers side rear that I hit with rustoleum when I did the fronts and core support. It has not rusted any more in 15 years. I saw I can buy the star punch on e-bay for like $50. don't know if I need to go that far, as I said I have had no problems reregistering it in my name using the buck tag. (Sold the car after High school and just recently bought it back.) The start punch is 5mm or 3/16ths if I recall, I just wasn't sure if the other #'s were larger or smaller than the star symbol. You can do an e-bay search for "Mustang punch" and see them.
