Vinyl Wrap Instead Of Paint.

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

The paint on my car is beyond done. Unfortunately I will never be able to afford a new paint job, and I'm considering just doing that 3M vinyl wrap kit for $450. Has anyone ever seen a car done with vinyl in a bright color? I've never seen one, and I want to know if it will turn out ok.

That's not what stuff is intended to do...

I've never installed it but I've seen it installed on a few of the company vehicles as graphics etc. The biggest problem I see you having is corrosion underneath of it.

The smaller problems(s) would be preparation of the surface and adhesion.

No, they have special vinyl just for recoloring cars now. My ex girlfriend's dad used to do those advertising wraps on vans and stuff. All the Ruf Porsches are finished in vinyl exclusively now. I've seen a bunch of videos on the internet of guys wrapping high end Mercedes in Matte Black, but I'm not sure how it would look in a brighter color, being that my car is color of the sun yellow. I'm not sure it would give the level of reflection I'm looking for. Adhesion really isn't a problem because it's heat shrinked on.

You could probably get a bright yellow vinyl to wrap your car with. I know a ton of guys on the BMW side of things that wrap their cars. It pretty much acts as a barrier to protect the paint anyway (assuming the paint is worth protecting, unlike mine).

A friend was showing/telling me about plasti dip, apparently if you want to buy by the gallon there's a multitude of colors. Something like that, he referenced colors like purple metallic silver, crystal white. I'd look into it. Pretty neat.

There is a new paint system called "Dip your Car" you should look into. It's becoming really popular here. People are painting Lambo's, Viper's, Skylines with this. When you don't want it on anymore you peel it off. The beauty part not only does it peel off but it's not expensive at all. We are painting a 2010 Honda Fit here at work soon. I'll take pics. I'm doing my DD rims in gun metal soon as well. The rim kits are $50 and to paint an entire car with gun and everything is under $300.

Check out this website.

Check out this black Skyline who did the Dip you Car kit in Matte yellow.

The "Dip Your Car" paint system is nothing more than Plasti Dip. I have been using Plasti Dip for years with great success, although I have never painted an entire car with it. I say go for it.

Cool. Thanks for the advice guys. I've seen the plasti dip stuff, but I don't think it will last long. 3m does make a yellow very close to my original canary yellow. My paint is not worth saving. It's pretty bad.

i don't know about a whole car, but i did plasti-dip my grille on my infiniti. it's held up so far with all the bugs and such after a couple months. now that i think of it, i haven't checked it out since going through a car wash this past weekend. i guess i should double check it before calling it still good.

I looked through that dip your car thing. I think the vinyl gives you a little more shine. The dip your car is sprayed on too, which is about the same as painting, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

My friend just plastidipped his Impreza. Here are some pics:

Good to know. I really would like to see one of these cars in person. Paint and body has always been one of the most expensive aspects of owning a nice car.
