recently when im driving my 92 5.0 ive been getting a wierd vibration in the shifter. sometimes its so violent i cant even have my hand on the shift nob. its not happening at any certain speed or rpm. sometimes it happens just driving sometimes when i let off the throttle or down shift. ive checked my engine mounts and my universal joints, they both seem fine. i think its something in my drive train but im not really sure. can anyone help me out with what eles could be causing this?

thanks

Usually if your driveshaft is tweaked, you will have a vibration so bad that it will shake your hand right off the shifter.......but this happens/gets worse as rpm's climb. May want to check your harmonic balancer; just watch it with your engine running and see if you notice a distinct 'wobble'.

im pretty sure its only when im in gear. since its started vibrating ive had it in my garage getting ready for new paint but im going to have to check that out, if its doing it in neutral could it be a completly differnt problem?

Basically, if it does it in neutral with the clutch engaged, you have balance/issues from the motor to the clutch (ie. harmonic balancer, motor mounts, flywheel, clutch, etc.).

If you keep it in neutral and push the clutch pedal in (disengaging the clutch) and it still does it, your issues are with the motor/flywheel.

If it does it only when in gear, your problems are from the tranny to the rear axle (ie. driveshaft).

This is only really a guide as to where to focus your attention to find the problem.

Based on your description, if you're comfortable the motor mounts are OK, I'd take a look at your rear suspension (ie. control arms, torque boxes). Sounds like something back there is getting misaligned when you get off of the power.
