I want to order VT stage 1 cams along with a SCT X-Cal-2 and what ever else I need.

Im smart with mechanics but never done anything like this. I know someone whos a new ASE mechanic, were arnt like buddys but I see him once a week and we talk cars for a bit. He offered to help install a CAI which I know my mother could handle. I want to ask him for the help but dont know how. I know this is an easy install, so whats the usally install time? How can I make this sound like cake? I dont mind even pay him $100, Im just afraid the local shops and even steeda will charge me atleast $500.

An I dont think steeda is all that great.

How do I explain the install as simple as possible?

Ive never done a cam swap, but my brother has on many OHC engines and pushrod engines, and he said its really not bad at all as long as you know whats what. But I still think it logically seems easier on a pushrod engine.. but I dont know, ill take his hands on word for it.

I think the biggest part is setting the timing chains correctly, ive read a few writeups and that was the most confusing part. As is changing the valve springs, but I dont know if you have to do that wiht the stage 1's or not.

Just straight up ask "Hey do you think you can help me install cams on my car? I'll provide food, and beer. And I promise not to take advantage of you when youre drunk "

Dont forget to wink at him

It is somewhat straightforward. I had never done for to my car than T/B, intake, and exhaust, and a speedcal, and I managed a PI headswap with L/Ts..
I think you can handle this. Get a haynes manual, ask your buddy, and go for it..

Or sell the cams to me for cheap..I'll put them in

if he's a good tech and he knows what he's doin, offer him like $200, plus bring a case of beer for the install. all you can do is ask.

Its only hard to swap in cams on a 4.6 if you dont have a clue about how the engine operates....otherwise its not bad at all and isnt the end of the world like the pushrod crowd wants you to believe.

I did mine with help from a freind who had never done a swap either. Mine is still on the road with 0 issues for about 5oK miles now.

If you want to do it right make sure you get the timing down too. I didn't and came out OK but if I ever did it again I'd go ahead and do it all.

Check here for links to how-to's for cams and timing.
