Wanting to paint door cups, how do i get that rubber crap off of them?

SO that stupid rubberised crap that is on my Door cups is flaking off and i want to get it ALL off so i can paint them. Im going to put a couple coats of gloss black and then a couple coats of clear so they will look great. But whats the best way to strip all that stuff off of the door cup without messing them up?

When I painted those things I started by spraying adhesion promotor on them, and the rubber stuff started just flaking off... but it only got a bit of it. I ended up sanding for 3 hours before I got it smooth and was happy with the way it was.

There has to be an easier way, but I was unable to find it.

A buddy of mine used to paint them with a spray gun, and they looked badass... I remember him mentioning that he had to sand off the rubber crap the hard way... but that the newer models do not have the rubber coating, so he would replace the rubber ones with those...

try some kind of paint stripper or carb cleaner....your painting it anyway.

Yes, I've dealt with this as well. I don't know of a solution other than sanding.

mines falling apart too but only on the passenger side and i almost never drive with anybody lol.

i want to do the same thing, paint them gloss black. not too big of a fan of the two tone interior. i like mine all black.

Yep, it melts the plastic. I had to replace mine.

Damn! Oh well i will just go the hard way. I want those thing smooth as glass anyway. My dad just picked up a nice gravity fed spray gun so i wanna spray those my Autometer gauge bezel, and my Radio and shifter bezel gloss black with a couple coats of clear.

We have a winner....Reducer will make it wrinkle up and peel right off...wont damage the plastic either...I used a rag soaked with reducer and wet it down...after a few she'll start peeling...takes a few times over though...beats sanding the chit...
