351C harmonic Balancer question:
After 20ish years of my engine sitting wrapped in plastic. I feel this is a good time to replace the aging balancer with a new one. It is really old and has been sitting for 20 years. I have just refreshed ALL of the engine gaskets this week: (Oil Pan, Timing Cover, Water Pump, Manifold, heads, fuel pump).
Full disclosure. I like to learn about things I don't understand and will ask questions. I'm a super curious person. I also hate to make mistakes that can be avoided.
Background of Car
Car: 1969 mach 1
Engine: Boss351c -Lunati Cam (very aggressive) yes I know its not OG, its a better engine, the car isn't concurs. But it wins shows. This is the engine it should have had. So I put one in it.
Transmission: have a Top Loader 4 speed.
Balance information:
The flywheel doesn't have any counter balance holes drilled into it. (see image)
My engine was rebuilt 20 years ago by Jeff Sneathan at SEMO Classic Mustangs, 500 miles into the build my car got hit by a drunk trying to suicide himself.
The engine was 100% fine (not the car). I put it to bed properly and removed it from the car.
20 years later I am finally finished the rebuild of the entire car. its time for the engine.
Which Should I use?
My question is this:
I'd rather not have to re-install another if the old one fails. The engine is out.
Here are images of the old HB the engine was built with (it has 3 holes drilled) I assume those holes are for balance?

- I have a OEM D1ZE-6316-AB harmonic Balancer is excellent condition. 10.1lbs My current build utilized this particular balancer until I removed it to reseal /replace gaskets on everything. The only wear is the leader inner edge where clearly pliers have bent a little steel (see images). It looks like some minor cracks at 2:00 on image
- This balancer is OLD it has sat un-spinning for 20 years. I'm worried about the rubber and its general health.
- TDC is marked perfectly
- I have a New Harmonic Balancer I purchased awhile back: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/PBB-PB1082ST
- The new balancer is a tad thinner, but has excellent markings and is said to be an excellent replacement. 9.2 lbs
- TDC Is marked perfectly and aligns with the old HB.
My question is this:
- Which to use?
- OEM the engine was built with? Its really old and I'd prefer to replace it if possible. If I don't is the engine really out of balance? is the 28oz counter balance strategically placed?
- Some have said use the new one, as both are using the same 28oz required counter balance. It shouldn't matter.
- Can these be mirror balanced? (someone suggested this). I'm not sure this is an option?
