the factory pump had a much shorter impellar than any aftermarket that i can find, causing it to lock up against the cylinder wall upon install. car has been sitting almost 20 yrs and i really need to change it but can't find correct one. any ideas?

One size oughta fit all in that series 6cyl...maybe an engine swap somewhere along the way? Check for local rebuilders...for instance, when I worked in auto parts in Memphis, we used to buy all our rebuilt water pumps from Garner. You might try calling them with your issue, if they are still in business. There may be others in some other bigger cities.

Happy hunting.
