Water Pump Went Out And Now Motor Makes Noise

Well my kid bought a 1992 gt. on the way home the water pump went out the motor starting making a light knocking/ tapping sound. We had it towed home and replaced the water pump, after replacing the water pump we started it back up and it is still making that noise. We also discovered the thermostat needed replacing. That is on the list for tonight. Do you think it has real damage?? The motor ran perfect till the thermostat ran out.

Check the crank pulley bolts and make sure they are tight, and check the balancer as well.

I will be replacing the thermostat tonight, but should i let it set up overnight before i run it?

How bad did it overheat? Usually v8's recover but not always. Was it low on oil, as well as overheating cooling system? 5.0 motors Are pretty tough, get cooling system right, change oil and filter, observe oil/ filter for any metal. You might cut open filter, or get a auto paint filter, and pour some through filter, see if anything shiny. Check water pump, make sure that's not your knock. They might be related because of overheating !

Take the serpentine belt off , start it up, and see if the noise is still there. That will eliminate anything that runs off the belt as a culprit. If the noise is still thee, it's time to start looking inside the engine to find the damage, burnt valve, scored cylinder, damaged bearing, stuck lifter, etc.

Yea its internal..... I am having it looked at by a auto mechanic today. Afraid for the worse. Its to bad this kid saved for a summer to buy this car!

Agreed. Not the bottom end. I would pull the valve covers.

I just played through speakers of my ecpedition. I agree with the gang, top end. You might have gotten lucky.keep us posted, send pics of damage if possible. If it was lower end, much deeper.

if you haven't checked the crank pulley bolts do it before you open valve covers. It sounds very similar to valve train noise. Mine backed out because I had a bad balancer. If I can find my video I will post it for you to compare.

Good call, hadn't thought about that. I had a Harley twin cam in my rental shop years back that had what sounded like a failed top end. The young tech was ready to tear into it. I had one a month before that had same ticking. We pulled primary cover, and sure enough the compensating nut came loose. We tightened nut, and noise disappeared. Hopefully that's your problem. Let us know.
