Be sure if you can't hear it run, to at least leak down test it. Very simple to do, but can save you a lot of money. Then if it checks out, new oil and Prime it.
Yea we wouldn't let him get it as his first car, He is almost 18 and is a pretty good driver. In fact he drives for the company i work doing deliveries in the summer months. But it appears he has a found a motor, that will need to use his intake, distrubuter and pulleys.
I remove all of the plugs and rocker arms, fill the cylinder with air (the motor may spin either direction depending where the piston is at on the stroke) It is important to use a consistent amount of incoming air pressure for consistent resuslts, I typically set the incoming regulator at 80 psi fwiw. I would look for a number 15% or less with consistent readings across the board to agree with a passed result. Hope this is helpfulYou buy or rent a tester (harbor freights is meh, but works). Essentially you leave all the spark plugs in except the one your testing. Bring that testing cylinder up to Top Dead Center, fill with air (either from a portable tank or air compressor) and watch for loss. Best case scenario is for the engine to be warmed up, however while cold, this still can provide a insight on whether or not there is a clear problem. That is the simple version, there are more in depth procedures, which I'm a visual person and youtube has a ton of videos showing better than I can explain it.

For your sons sake please address the brakes on this car before adding horsepower!!!! I have a stock engine with basic bolt ons, 3.73 gears and a manual transmission and trust me you can have some fun with that and get into trouble real quick. Please put $$ into a 5 lug swap which will provide much better braking. These cars can be a bit inexpensive to acquire but cost just as much as any other classic to modify and/or restore. You should start gaining your own knowledge about this car and grab a wrench and a beer and learn. This is a great site for advice without the attitude especially when it's a Father & Son type build.Man you guys are great!
Sounds like you guys have a good plan. Be careful with taking on too much work all at one time, it can be overwhelming. If you are paying somebody else to do the engine work then you and your son can do the 5 lug brake swap in the mean time. You can create a build thread once you get started if you want, we love watching other people modify and restore their cars. It also will create a single thread for any advice or help you may need during the process.Ohh yes a 5 lug swap and disc brakes all around on the winter list! I am the one doing most of the work. We are both learning as we go along! I am loving the advice we are getting so far. The hard part is relaying advice to a teenager! haha But we all know that!
