i blew out the water pump gasket for the forth time....im junking the pump and geting a new one....but i was wondering if anyone has thought of or tryed JB welding the pump back plate right to the pump??
Is it leaking there or on the timing cover. I had a leak like you had. I couldnt get it to seal. Come to find out my timing cover was warped. I had my timing cover milled a bit and fine now. Just a thought
I kept haveing this problem.Old timing cover matched up against NEW waterpump.I got rid of BLUE rtv for the better black rtv.Not too much tho just enough on both sides of gasket then wait till rtv get "tacky".I HAND tighten all bolts down.Wait till rtv sets up(1/2hour)then tork to specs. I swear 99% of these gasket,waterpump,thermostat leaks are from over tightening and pushing the rtv\gasket arround. MY take of course only!!!!
I have heard quite a few guys saying they blow the gasket out with stewart pumps myself included. I blew it twice I think. Blew it at the track too which sucked! I'm no rookie either so i know I did it right and I used fel pro gaskets for the back plate and for the pump. I think i'm gonna buy one from autozone.
Just an idea, but I've had just as many leaking water pumps as anyone. I've probably changed the gasket 10 times in the past year. Anyway, I bought a new pump and tried it w/ the blue RTV, copper RTV, just gaskets with no RTV, Just RTV and no gaskets, leaked every time one way or another. I finally read on here that someone used some stuff called "The Right Stuff." and it worked.
I went to autozone and a thing of "the right stuff" is around $13, BUT, it did work and I haven't had any more leaks since installing it (knock on wood). I didn't use any gaskets or anything, just "The right stuff."
havnt even looked to see where it blew out yet..but every other time it was on the bottom between the pump and back plate...and i installed it like everyone else...black RTV both sides of fel pro gasket let set up a bit installed torqued..let set for awhile then retorqued ect...
two of the times its blown out is when iv been "geting on it" ...and im sure both times the thermo. was shut...but it shouldnt matter..iv got on it with my old stock motor with the thermo shut and i never had this happen..with stock pump ect.
timing chain cover and pump where both new when i built motor...both have only around 3-400 miles on them...
was just thinken...why cant i JB weld the plate to the pump...i cant think of any reason "I" would ever need to take it off....
so if i get a new pump and still have probs i dont know....
I guess you *could* JB weld the water pump to the timing cover - I can't see any problem w/ it as long as you get it all sealed properly, but if your pump ever goes out, you'll be replacing your timing cover along with it.
no no, you misunderstand..i mean JB weld the pump back plate to the PUMP..not the pump to TC cover...id still use a gasket ect. as you would normaly between plate and TC cover...
every gasket blow out iv had was on the bottom between those two small bolts that have the low profile head you install first..reason im thinken of jb welding the plate to the pump
i figured out my coolent leak problum and it was the hose that goes to the over flow up to the radiator nipple was pinched so it was creating pressure in the cooling system, so much frustration cause of something so simple
way back when i installed the new motor i riped the factory rubber overflow hose but it was towards the end so i just cut it shorter and streched it up to the radiator...not thinking about how it is so tight geting pulled downward its like its pinched and not leting enough coolent go to the over flow
Rtv and gaskets is usually the worst way, as rtv is slippery, the opposite of what you want. Something usually slips and leaks.
I have made plain blue or red rtv work and it is easiest to clean next time.
However, I am back to gaskets and either Permatex No 2 or HiTack gasket adhesive, on both sides of the gasket. It seems to work the first time, every time.
