My 92 has 75k original miles and still has the factory water pump. The pump gasket has a small seepage leak. The shaft seal on the pump itself is not leaking. I’m definitely going to replace the gasket but I’m not sure if I’m gonna put a replacement pump on or continue with faith in my non leaking original pump.

What say you? Believe in the factory pump or put it on the shelf?

I wonder if I’m stuck with the crap shoot of every reman pump being a piece of crap.

Is there a consensus on what brand is a good replacement?

Check the "Made in Merka" forum: https://stangnet.com/mustang-forums/forums/made-in-america.368/

I think Tuff Stuff does water pumps.

I had a Bosch pump on my car that went 20 years or so. Changed it out to the Edelbrock pump about 3-4 years ago.

I've become somewhat of an expert on changing water pumps, because of cheap Chinese pumps.
Seems like even the expensive ones are made in China( motorcraft, edelbrock, ect.)
My next one will be a made in USA ,probably the tuff stuff one.

Can anyone tell me for sure at what mileage the shaft seal failed on their original factory water pump?

Does it really matter,I don't think so.
If you just want to change the gasket and see how many miles you can go then go ahead and roll them bones!

Pull the pump, remove the backing plate, clean the gasket material off and prep the surfaces, install new gaskets and send it.

Maybe. Although the timing cover was off not long ago because I stripped the block to have the deck shaved. I would have addressed any issues at that time. But you’re right I have not ever separated the pump from the timing cover.

So, if it's not leaking, and you plan to have to re-do it if you touch it anyhow, just leave it be and have one on the shelf with all the "stuff" ready to go with it.

Now that’s an idea. Stocking spare parts is definitely in my wheelhouse. I’ve been getting skeptical about parts supply reliability.

Incidentally, since the head gasket retorque, the water pump gasket is no longer leaking. I’m guessing combustion pressure in the water jacket was contributing to the water pump gasket failure. It’s not leaking now.
