Way TOOO much timing???????

I just got my motor together and I ran the timing at 12 degrees with the spout removed. I noticed it seemed a little sluggish so I advanced it. I have been advancing it two degrees at a time and then test driving it to check for spark knock. The problem is I am at 32 degrees BTDC and still no knock. Can this be right? I am using a snap-on digital advance timing light and I am definetly on number one cylinder. I also degreed the cam and set the timing pointer to 0, when I built the motor. Why am I running so much timing and the motor not pinging?

are you sure your mark is dead on zero on the balancer, i think u said it was but you sort of confused me....

if it is, if its a stock balancer the outer ring could have slipped and moved around due to the rubber cracking and drying out.

try to old time by ear method, find where it has a good idle. starts good and has the best power. its hard to explain but play with it by ear for a while and then you tell what it likes and doesnt like. get it running its best and note the marks on the balancer, if its super off like 32degrees i would look at the balancer and see if the ring did in fact move.

Are you using a stock dampner? It might have spun on the rubber dampner causing the timing marks to be off. I have seen it happen to stock dampners time and time again.

I'd be seeing some sort of issue with the car or method. You advanced base timing 20* and noted no issue. Are you sure the SPOUT circuit is functional? If it isnt, this would be what keeps you from pinging at a theoretical 60* total timing. If you blip the throttle with the timing light pulsing, does the balancer soar past the graduated marks?

Good luck.

It has a brand new Pioneer SFI balancer and I am 100% percent sure that my pointer is at TDC on number one. I used a dial indicator and adjusted my pointer to get it perfect. When the spout connector is removed the timing light shows a steady reading. When I have the spout connector installled the timing jumpsaround. I am confused.

I will try to blip the throttle with the timing light flashing and see if it goes past the graduation marks.

Ok I may have found the problem. When I opened the hood to set the timing (for the 100th time) I noticed one injector was unplugged. I plugged it in and the car suddenly came to life (major bonus). All this time I thought the loping was due to the cam and I actually had a mis-fire. I disconnected the battery to clear and adaptive stragety and then reset the timing to 16 BTDC. It runs good now. I am thinking that the unplugged injector was allowing me to add all that timing? I also am not sure were the best initial timing for my combination should be? And also at WOT the computer goes to open loop and does not adjust timing but uses a table to determine timing? Is this correct? If so I wonder how important setting initial timing is? What does it actually affect?

i gotta ****y harmonic balancer that i cant even read the numbers on and think im going to change it again with a good one but do you guys know how easy it is to do a balancer witht he engine in? dont seem to hard but just wondering... because my car seemed slugish so i advanced the timing a little (wit a light) and right now it is passed 10 by quite a bit and there is no sign of any pinging....
( i marked 0* and 10 befor and after with a paint marker)

Red88, you got it right - it's fairly straight forward on a fox if you have an OEM depth radiator and fan. Do use a removal and install tool.

Good luck.
