We figured it out!

Figured out the reason my car won't start! The A/C compressor seized (the pulley has been squeaking for the longest time...heh heh... whoops ) and needs to be replaced. Anyone know if I can get it tested to see if it's the compressor or if just the a/c clutch burned out?

you will have too replace the whole unit if you want working ac.. if you dont care then you can knock the old clutch, pulley and coil off and get new ones but use the old compressor.. when the a/c is off the pulley free wheels on the compressor..

if the ac pulley was chattering, its toast. have fun spending $700-$1000 to fix it.

the thing thats going too screw you up from doing this yourself if you go the non-a/c way is removing the refrigerant. if you can get somebody too remove the refrigerant then you can do it yourself..

You can remove the freon when you disconnect the lines from the compressor, but don't tell anybody its bad for the environment. The hard part is finding the guages, vacuum pump to recharge it yourself.

well you can do that.. if you do dont just go taking lines off.. be carefull.. the freeon will shootout and you dont want that stuff in your eyes and stuff.

Isnt this new freeon not harmful to the ozone layer? the old stuff eats holes in the atmasphere (sp) LOL. But then again, im not an enviormentalist at ALL, so i really dont care too much. I run an O/R X and dont take my oil to the jiffy lubes . Im not going to drive to the freegin lube with 6 quarts of oil in my back seat...heck no.

I think it is still pretty bad for it, but I think the big difference is it can be recycled and re-used... Not sure though. My dad always had any tools I ever needed to the the ac stuff, so In my 20 or so years working on cars, I've never actually seen a shop do it.

If you decide to vent the refrigerant yourself, I recommend doing it slowly while protecting your eyes and skin with safety glasses and gloves. R134 has a pressure of ~70psi at 70F. When the refrigerant expands, it aborbs heat rapidly and can cause frostbite ( even in Florida ).

Would I have to fabricate something to mount the pulley on? I'm trying to fix with with as little money as possible right now.

I suppose I could just take the clutch out. Would it be best to disconnect my a/c switches?
