Weight savings?

Is it true that you can save some weight by swapping the front sway bar with one out of a 4cylinder?? I thought I heard that somewhere... I'm trying to cut down on weight where I can, cheaply...

I took out my rear seat, deleted my smog pump... I want to keep my base stereo so that can't go... any other cheap things to lose a little weight?

Removal of the sway bar completly will do a better job. I would imagine a front swaybar out of a 4 banger would be thinner, but weaker.

I know that steeda makes a lightweight replacement one for the fox's so if you had any qualms about removing it altogether, you could consider that.

I took my front sway bar off and now when I take a turn faster than 20 mph the car feels like it is going to flip over. The front sway is one heavy mother. A/C is heavy and so is the stock fan.

take out insulation car lost 30 punds that way and any unessarly accessories under the hood. race seats find them cheap (eBay) and weight a lot less then stock.

aluminum heads will save you a good fifty pounds, a/c delete is about another 35, and some sound deading will all add up to a good 100 pounds of weight

I would try to focus on losing the most weight at the front of the car, since that is were you want the car to be the lightest<-- is that a word .

ditch the power steering....and like the other guys said that sound insulation crap under the carpet weighs about 30

Put the battery in the trunk and replace it with an optima battery, fiberglass hatch, fiberglass hood, $30 Summit seats, ALL SOUND DAMPENER (under the seats, inside the door panels, that crap on the firewall, the stuff above the headliner, spare tire/jack, in thew trunk/hatch area,) remove smog, remove ac and all the wires that attach to them, remove the front clip and take out the bumper bar and plastic...do the same in the rear. Remove front swaybar, get a flaming river manual rack and remove the window cleaner resevoir.

Should take off a healthy amount of weight.

as far as the sway bar goes, unless you're a road racer you wont really feel the difference, i took mine out, to me it doesnt feel much more different, i take freeway interchange onramps at 70mph no problem, overall its not that big of a deal,and yeah it weights at least 30lbs, maybe 40.

so removing it doesn't really make the car THAT much less stable, does it?

My car is mostly stock, and I don't do that much highway driving in it.

exactly, like i said if you're into handling and all of that, then keep it, but if you're not doing road racing turns/speeds on the street then its just dead weight.

I forgot to mention when switching to a manual rack you lose the weight of the ps pump +liquid and all attaching hoses and wires.

If all you care bout is going fast in a straight line remove the front swaybar, it shouldn't change everyday driving unless you drive like a wackjob around public corners.

It depends on your area, some state you can not remove stock emission equipment and some don't care. It also depends if the people do a visual test, but you will pass the "sniffer" test.

I agree. Removal of the front swaybar does effect steering responce, but like said above, unless your driving like a maniac, you will be OK.

I would like to keep the handling decent, so I might look to just get a lighter one or something... and I don't usually drive like an idiot...haha
