Weird Cooling Issue

Cars runs extremely well except for this one small thing. Whenever I start from a cold start, in about five minutes the stock temp gauges shoots up to L and the high speed fan comes on while the Autometer gauge sits at around 100. Then the Autometer gauge shoots up to about 225 for second or two and then both gauges start to come down together and stay at normal temp. Any ideas?

i would say either air in the line or a bad t-stat

take the t-stat out and put it in some water in a pot on the oven. stick a thermometer in there and see what temp its opening up

Electric or mechanical AM gauge?

I'd also want to see if air is bleeding into the system as the coolant contracts. It really is kind of a strange symptom to have happen every time, and have a gauge on each side of the t-stat do it. Interesting.

As an aside, next time you have stuff torn apart, you might want to switch the gauge senders around (if your t-stat sticks, your AM gauge is going to be slow to let you know about it).

Good luck bud.

I was thinking either air or bad t stat too. In the past, any air has worked it's way out of the system after the first drive and on Sunday I drove it for almost three hours straight. I'm leaning towards t stat.

Your AM gauge is downstream of the T-stat. The factory gauge is upstream. On the T-stat opens, the AM gauge sees the same temp as the factory gauge.
