Weird noise

I'm getting a low grade howling noise when making hard turns, mostly noticing when pulling in to park, car not under power. At first is was only with hard lefts, now it does it both left and right turns. It only does it after car is throughly warmed up (highway speeds). I took it to my dealer to get it looked at, he was up to his arsehole in motor replacements (not stangs), so he asked if I could bring it back in 30 days and they would tear into it. I think it's in the rear end (clutch pack ?). I can't hear it under power but then again I'm running loudmouths. The sound is very similar to an underinflated tire on hot asphalt (tires are not low). Any thoughts?

I'd find another dealer if possible. It might be the rear end, but then it may be an axle bearing or wheel bearing too..

same problem, i am taking mine in tomorrow. I dont think it is anything to major, I had a 91 that made this same sound after I changed the rear gears but it went away after a while.

The friction clutches in the diff usually make more of a creaky noise. The noise you describe is typical of wheel bearings. It's also something you would hear if you had something hanging loose or out of place in your front wheel well, and when you turn the wheel the treads rub on it.

I'm with Big-Foot, if it could be a bearing, find someone to look at it soon.

If your pulling into parking spaces at highway speeds then I am not surprised that you are having problems.

By far, the most likely causes:
1) Axle bearing
2) Carrier bearings (in the rear end)

In neither case will you have a catastrophic failure on the 8.8 axle if you wait a few months to get it fixed. A Ford 9 inch would be another story.

It is the axle clutch plates--they usually chatter but in some cases it sets up a loud moan-please ask dealer if a TSB is available and let us know the number.for

Dealer said there is a TSB for the clutch packs making that noise. They are fixing mine at the next oil change.
