Weird Turn Signal Problems

When I go to turn on my right hand turn signal, about half of the time the front does not blink at all and the rear blinks very guickly, then generally after several seconds the front will kick in and both will blink at normal speed. I tried changing my front bulb (even tried the back) and no help. The other weird thing is if I use the lane change mode or hazard switch, it seems to not do this. I made sure the front bulb was secure and the socket did not appear to have any corrison.
I had to replace the flasher unit on my 74 mustang in HS a few times, but if I remember correctly, when it went bad it affected all four lights, not just one light.

Yep. When a bulb is not flashing for one reason or another, the bi-metallic contact in the flasher does not heat up enough to bend away, which would cause the light to turn off for .5-1.0 second. So with one bulb functional, it is normal for the remaining light to be solid (like yours).

I would turn the key and TS on, on that side. then play with the bulb and goose the harness to see if you can make the light stop working. With an intermittant issue, this might be the best way to find it.

If I light is blinking faster it is because of parallel connections on your relay and the one light doesn't pull any current;therefore, the other blinks twice as fast as the cicut intermits faster. Usually if it is blinking really it means you have a burnt bulb somewhere on that relay. Since it still works sometimes I would check for loose connections from the fuse box right to that side.

I am not sure if we are on the same page. In my experience, the only way to get the flasher to flash too quickly is if there is too large a draw on the circuit. E.g. someone puts new corner lights on, and the wattage of the new bulbs is greater than that of the stock bulbs.

I am not sure if that is what you are saying or not.

As an aside, electronic flashers are nice for the above issue (like if one needs to add towing lighting, etc on a truck).

YIM After reading your post again, I have to say that I'm 99% sure you need to replace the multifunction switch (which is the whole turn signal stick including the part that attaches to the steering column). You'll be taking the plastic off the steering column and the ingition key solenoid to remove it, but no big deal at all if you follow Haynes/Chilton.

Now that I think of it, even your local ford dealer should have the part for a price near what Mustangs Unlimited sells them for.

Your description is exactly the problem I had AND I too changed a couple bulbs that didn't need replacing.

Someone please speak up if I'm off here, but that's how I solved the problem.

the switch may not need replacing first check the wires in the back of the signal post where the wires go to they may have just come lose..if so put them fully in and check the signal if so RTV gasket maker will hold them in place
