Welding Axel Tubes?

I am getting ready to rebuild my rear end again and am trying to determine if I should pull the housing out and have the center section welded to the axel tubes. I have a set of trick flow heads on the way and a Kenne Bell waiting to go the motor so I should be making well north of 400hp at the wheels. Has anyone done the welding?

I don't think welding the tubes is really neccesary unless you are making 500-600 at the wheels. I dunno about with the trickflows but I know a few guys with centri's and some sticky tires that didn't weld them and they are fine. I would worry more about them torque boxes if I were you.

i'd weld them. mine are leaking already from just a few thousand street miles on DR's.

I have 125,000 miles on DRs and a few hundred passes on slicks with 308 RWHP and have had no problems. I've also heard of people spinning the tubes on stock horsepower and street tires. I'm going to get mine welded along with the torque boxes soon.

If it will keep you up at night worrying then you might as well have them welded.

DR's and solid LCA's aren't kind to the rear of the car. they arent badly off, just enough for them to start leaking where they are pressed into the housing

It's not the HP that matters, it's the traction. Personally, I'd weld them anyways. I have welded all the tubes in all my cars, even the stockers. I like dumping the clutch and banging gears. Even with street tires or drag radials, I'd still weld them for peice of mind.

Can they be welded on the car or do you have to take things apart?

It's best to take the assembly off, put it in a jig to make sure it's all straight, and weld it while being held in place by the jig. Some people do it on the car, it's just considered riskier.
