Well, after my VT engines horror story, what engine builder should i go with.

Adrenalin,
Love the car man. Still following your build. Seems like our cars have had similar mods at the same time so when I'm searching for info your threads come up. Just wanted to explain that so you don't think I'm a stalker or anything :) Now Seriphita that's different. J/K. Anyways, I vote for Fox Lake. I was looking at MMR but in your case, with the previous money loss, I would suggest going with most reliable. And from my internet knowledge and from your previous experience I would say Fox Lake. I don't know how a person could handle losing the money on 2 engines. Luckily I have a buddy who has built a few engines, he has 4 stangs right now. So I'm looking for a used aluminum block and used Cobra rotating assembly. Then I have a friend at a machine shop to clean everything up. Money is hard to come by so it' s the used parts bin for me. Good luck with your build.

thanks 03GTinFLA! also thanks for you opinion on company as well. good luck to you on your build as well. get those heads and cams on there....you will love it.

i dont like what im hearing about MMR. although MMR's options seems to crush the others. they have so much to choose from....i do really like that. i just dont know enough about them. they say they warrenty their engines and their turn around time is a couple of weeks.

you could build a pretty decent motor just being the " general contractor".get a used teskid block, buy the frpp 3.7 dry liner's(49.95 a piece) have a machine shop install,I was quoted 400. either use a stock stroke cobra crank,3,750 stroker crank, or even offset grind the cobra crank to 2"(the strokers rod size). buy all the parts from were you find them the cheapest and have a good machine shop assemble it. believe or not,you can get a engine with better parts for less money. plus you can say it's your motor.

Ive followed your progress in the short time that Ive returned to stangnet. I've fealt bad for you with your build progress, and wish you the best. I've talked to Tim over the years, and the guy is great though I have never bought and engine from him.

Personally, there is only one way to go with an engine for me. Talk to the local engine builders in your community. Being in NJ, Im sure you have a bunch of the top machine shops within an 1-3 hours driving time from where you are located, and a lot of great engine builders. Build a relationship with them, and talk to a lof of people on ALL the boards about their shop. Not only the mod motor guys, but a lot of the pushrod people.

You've already spent a ton of money on parts you will not see. Why not get a top notch engine builder that is local, that way if any problems arise, you can just take the car over to the shop. Over the years, many people like MPH have proven themselves to be great, but why not get a local, face to face relationship with somebody so that you feel better about any problems that arise? There are a tone of great engine builders out there, and not everbody advertises on the net.

I was actually going to run a MMR 900 in my car if it makes you feel any better.

If my bone stock oil pump and bone rotating assyembly held up to 550RWHP, I just dont see there being that much of a need for being too picky about the aftermarket oil pump gears and the such. They are both obviously stronger than stock and both have had people that manage to break them....always going to be someone out there that can break a fully built billitt motor while only making 500HP.
Sometimes motors just arent built properly, or the owner just doesnt take car of their parts.
As I have said in the past, NO company can build a 100% perfect motor 100% of the time.

i did some searching and other then the mmr oil pumps failing i havent seen anything bad about thier engines. I have talked to them about there cobra blocks and some other stuff and they are very up front and honest. if your worried about them assembling your engine you can purchase the parts and put it together yourself.

thanks mark. honestly, i havent looked inyo any local builders. i just alwasy thought it would be better to get someone well known through the whole country and mustang community to build the block. i just figured they specialize in the mustang modulars so they would be the best....but who knows.

hotmustang - so mmr is your choice.....does make me feel a bit better about them.

im not worried about them assembling the engine so much. just getting it and having it be very reliable with no failing parts.

i know MPH stands behind their work and i dont hear any problems. fox it dont seem that alot of people on the boards at least have their engines....dont know why. so i dont know how they stand behind their work. i havent heard of any failures for fox either.

Did you check ModularDepot and ModularFords? Didn't take me long, but I found very easily 5 different people that either had defective MMR motors or didn't get the motor they paid for. You are really reading the hell story it is to get MMR to deal with their mistakes. If I spent some time searching, I could easily find more.

there is a guy i know that had issues with his VT longblock...cams actually came out and bent valves.

Someone will have issues with every engine type. From what I recall MPH stopped using VT due to the warenty work they were getting...thats why they stopped selling motors for a while. Tim said they couldnt really make any money with the warrenty work coming back. THIS IS JUST WHAT I RECALL TIM TELLING ME AND FROM READING ON THEIR SITE. He will correct me if im wrong.

point being that there isnt ONE SINGLE engine builder that wont have some negitive accusations made. And this is the internet...alot of times people dont tell you what they did to the motor before it blew up or had issues.

MMR is a good engine builder, and like I said I personally was going to buy from them after looking into all the companys and comparing what you get for the price and seeing how many people were happy with each motor. And the main thing is that I took my stock motor WELL beyond its rated limits and it was fine with 70K.
MMR rates their 900 to 900RWHP and 8000RPM...if they were not sure through testing it would hold that they wouldnt warrenty their work, and if they didnt hold they wouldnt be in business and growing everyday like they are.

Thats just my thoughts.

i did just check modular depot before the last 2 replies just to see whats going on there, i havent logged in fro a while. first thing i see is a mmr motor failure thread. lol!

however, are they growing everyday? they are doing good? mmr

i think im leaning toward fox lake right now honestly. what do you guys know about their engines.......are they holding up? i just dont see too many on the internet that have them. i havent heard any problems but that could be due to the lesser amount out there.....anyone know?

I know of a few Foxlake built motors, all of them are still running strong.

I am saying MMR is not good and I won't deal with them to find out otherwise. What I do see from them is when something from them goes wrong, they are hell to deal with. That is not right, I don't care what company it is. That is enough for me not to consider them.

Another thing with MMR is that they use a cheaper grade of parts than others, that is why they are cheaper. That is also the reason some are having issues like a flywheel not being able to bolt to the crank like one MMR customer had.

If you want to use MMR, that is fine. If you want to defend them, that is fine. Is it going to change my opinion of them, no. Is it going to stop me from saying what I say about them, no.

well, i think i like fox lake. like i said ron did my heads and cams and did an awsome job. he gave me exactly what i asked for in a miled blower cam setup. the heads and cams gave me 35rwhp proven on the dyno. that is good enough for me.

now, i just have to hope they are still running strong and not going out of business like garbage vt engines anytime soon.

i do like the sound of a iron big bore (boss) block with standard stroke rather then stroker. however, i dont know if fox has those blocks to build on or how much it would be. i think ill send ron at fox another email.

thanks guys. keep the opinions and info comming if you want, but i think im going FOX!!!

no i didnt but thanks. i may still buy a rotating assembly from them.
