Went 4 1/2 month without changing oil. Oil consumption.

Hello. Need advice. Just recently she started to consume oil. 2 weeks ago it started. What should I do now? Just bought a gal of Valvoline restore and protect . The oil has cleaning properties, will it be enough? Should I do BG 109 engine flush with fresh oil?

It's my mistake, won't happen again.

Another question does 1995 5.0 hold exactly 5 qt? No more?
No less? I think my dip stick isnt accurate, many be wrong dip stick.

Here is another question. 2 weeks ago I got back home from a long trip, upon arriving, after 3.5 hour drive notice my engine started to "drag". I thought it was my tire pressure. Then low oil light came on. Turned off the car, restarted it, and light was off. Then added oil.

Oil was still in range on dipstick, but on low. But I think my dipstick is not right size.

Did I damage/skar my bore/pistons?

5 1/2 quarts with a filter change.

Check the intake for oil.

Check for leaks.

Check the exhaust tips for oil.

Check the radiator for a milkshake.

5.5 qt. Ok! Thanks. Defently underfilled it. Has wrong dipstick.
MOtor wes dragging due to oil starvation. My bearing are fine, I never lost oil pressure on my aftermarket gauge.

Now I have to do leak down test, and a baroscope test.

Odometer is broken, it's stuck at 132k miles. So unknown miles.

Had it maybe 8 months. Memory is rusty.

I changed oil every 3 months.

Stock mufflers removed. And racing radiator.

How much gas have you burnt in 3 months?
Unless it's high stress like racing or a power plant (some called a 'pony motor') with a constant load or try'n to clean the inside of a neglected engine I think oil change at 3 months is a waste of money but what do I know .

Mine gets a yearly oil change- mainly because at best I drive it 1000 miles in the summer, if I’m lucky, and it’s not broken sitting in the garage…

On my 94 jeep cherokee in the time I owned it did two oil changes on it. That was for 11 years and from 195000 to 285000 miles. Yeah it would leak a lot of oil but it was stout

The oil looks pretty bad I think. It had thickened. It's not black but very dark brown.

In 1 months at least 5 to 6 tanks.

And another thing, I have a lower temp thermostat, I think it's 170 deg. And I think it's causing the engine to burn more gas.

When you drain oil that's been sitting for a while without first, heating it all the way to operating temperature then [that] it exactly what it looks like.

I see nothing so far in this thread that indicates that you have an oil consumption issue.

More testing is required.

There are companies that test engine oil or most any oil for that matter, viscosity breakdown and contaminants. Truck stops, big truck shops used to do this a lot for diesels. This wil tell you how good your oil is at a given mileage

Google "Oil Sample Analysis" in your area. You don't need very much but I would [not] take a sample of the oil that you've already drained.

It has been contaminated just by putting it in that container.

I heard about the analysis . I left a sample to test. How would it get contaminated in that container? Just curious.

One part I'm trying to figure out. Recently before the oil change, when I was driving I noticed engine being sort of laggy. Like driving with low air in tires. I checked oil level. It was on full(top of cross hatch on dip stick) I added 1 qt. Of fresh oil and this laggy condition went away.

I'm thinking oil got so think and became a heavier weight and didn't drain back to pan fast enough. Pistons get their oil by crank splashing the oil right? So low oil level in pan caused this?

I don't think I got 3k miles on this oil change( odometer is broken). Very hot climate was the problem I think. Oil evaporates, breaks down under hot temps.

It's been proven in different tests, one on Engine Masters, that one quart low on oil will actually improve horsepower. So I don't think you have an oil level problem as much as you do something else.

Nothing makes sense to me here...if you were a half quart low, your engine wouldn't care and you wouldn't notice either. I've never heard of oil evaporating either. I used to live in Phoenix and never noticed anything like that. Best thing you can do is send your oil to Blackstone labs. Go to their website and they will mail you a collection kit for free. Pull the oil right out of the pan after it has drained about a quart out first. I think an analysis costs like $45. Also, oil changes everyt 3 months is throwing your money in the trash unless you drive over 5k miles in that time frame. Motor oil these days (especially synthetic) is light years better than it was 30 years ago. What weight oil are you using?
