Went to the track tonight...

I told a few people I would post my times to do a before and after gear swap comparison, so here they are.

It's the first time I have been since the 4.10 gear installation, and keep in mind with these times that it is an auto. My previous best and new best are as follows:

Old
60': 2.286
1/8 Mile ET: 9.900
1/8 Mile MPH: 73.17

New (with gears)
60': 2.1671
1/8 Mile ET: 9.4620
1/8 Mile MPH: 73.80

I can explain why the MPH wasn't higher, it was because I manual shift the car and I let the RPM's climb to high before putting it into drive, so I hit the rev limiter. I don't think it hurt my time much, but definitely did not help the MPH. Anyways, my best MPH of the night was at 75.63 MPH.

I was overall very satisfied with the results. It's definitely been the best bang for my buck thus far for my stang. I wish I would have ran better 60' times, but honestly I figured they weren't going to get much better. My car seemed to be a little better with the 4.10's, but still missing the low end grunt. And before anyone states it, I know it is because of the intake. I bought the thing and put it on long before I started reading the info from this website. I am tempted to go back to my stocker and see if there is a noticable difference, but it just doesn't seem worth the work right now. Oh well, but for the rest of you AOD-E guys who are tired of getting stomped on by 5-speeds, the gears will hands down give you the best improvement in times for a bolt on car. It gained me almost a 1/2 of a second!

in most cases youre going to lose MPH when you add gears no matter what...
That is so not true man. Where did you get that from? It puts you into your power band faster and for longer. I went from 14.8 to 14.3 with 3.73s and i gained 1 MPH. My friend with a 98 cobra dropped some E.T. and also gained MPH.

Gears kill MPH on the top side i.e can't go past 140 mph n/a mostly stock with bolt on's, geared out in other words.

Oh i was thinking he ment MPH in the Quarter mile, if he means total mathematical top end then yeah.
And even then it's only true as a mathmatical calculation. The vast majority of 5.0L Mustangs will run out of horsepower before maxing 5th gear out, even with 4.10's.

Yeah i believe with my mph calculater program on EEC analyzer even with 3.73s my 5th gear could go to 185mph or so. which im sure i dont have the power to attain that speed.

Not trying to come off wrong here, but I think you should be running faster than you are. My car runs 9.5 @ 75mph and all it has is a CAI, pulleys, shifter, H-pipe and mufflers.

I think with some more practice that could easily be a high 8 second car. Just keep practicing and those times will really improve :nice:

Keep in mind this is an AODE 'vert. I HIGHLY doubt it'll see 8's in the 1/8th with his current setup, but a mid low 9 is doing pretty good in my book for his car.

Well, I wish it were that easy to just practice more, unfortunately, it's not. My car has absolutely NO tire spin off the line and from there, the automatic does the rest. The only things I can control is the shift points and my launch, which I experiment with. I was able to get the best 60' by "loading" up the car holding the brake and reving to approximately 1500 RPM's, then release. Any more RPM's and the car would begin spinning the tires and I would in essence do a burnout at the line, any fewer RPM's and it would kind of pause before getting with the program. I was running consistant 9.6's and running the car about every 8 mins (very few people at the track) before shutting it off to cool and icing the intake. The temp dropped to about 1/2 of what it normally is and the intake was icy cold on the 9.46 run.

Exactly! My goal for the car was to be under 9.5, and I was very excited to get it. I learned early on that it was going to be a challenge having the slowest GT package offered from 94-95 (auto + vert), so I am extremely happy to have it running close to were most stock faster GT (hardtop + 5-speed) are. I know my car will never see 8's with my current setup, (unless it was downhill... HAHA!) but I still want to get that 60' time down. I would imagine I could see close to 9.1-9.2's if I could get my 60' down to about a 2.00. Thanks for the replies.
