went up to the barona 1/8 mile drags last Sat. night to have a little fun.my best time before with the 347 in the 1/8 was a 7.67 at 88mph with a 1.7060' which happen once with an average of 7.7 or 7.8's at 89. on my first pass with the new turbo kit i ran a 7.34 @ 97.6 with a 1.82 60' leaving at 2000rpms with the transmission shifting at 5000rpms on its own. second pass i left the line at 2500 and shifting at 6000rpms and ran 7.187 @98.6 with a 1.75 60'. third pass i left at 3000rpms and pulled a 1.66 60' and ran a 7.10 at 98.6. its really unbelievable how fast you start moving when the turbo starts to spool and when the tires don't spin

all the runs were done at 11.1-11.2 a/f so i took out one size jet in the front and rear and headed for the lanes again trying for that 7.0 or 6.99 pass.

i took off hard hit second gear and noticed some smoke coming out in the rear then noticed smoke coming out of the hood so i shut down and coasted through the rest of the 1/8 mile. when i stopped rolling dustin and i inspected the damage. one very important vacuum line came off the wastegate as i was making the pass.

i broke down about 10:30pm then called for a tow truck which didn't get to us till 3am. last night Dustin and I pulled the motor and found holes in pistons #1,#4, #5 and #8.

Did the WB show lean? Or did detonation take it out? Look at the bright side now you can get some pistons with bathtubs in them for low CR.

he has to run lean. The funny part about turbo cars, is when it feels really really fast before the motor takes a dump.

What type of hose are you using for the wastegate? If you are not using ss braided hose with an fitting, you should consider for next time.

Is that normal that each of the 4 pistons on the ends of the block would be ruined first? Sounds like those center 4 cylinders were hogging all the air/fuel charge.

i didn't record that pass on the LM1 but the pistons look as if it went lean.

it was T'd off from the back of the carb to the check valve and to the wastegate. this time its going to be a AN fitting tapped into the intake manifold.

thats the same thing dustin and I talked about with the 4 pistons, the others are perfect.

It was both. Plugs showed detonation, and pistons,too. They broke at the eyebrow. But they were also melted.I think if he had had a little more seat time, it may have helped.(Not to blame this on him at all.) But he says it pulls harder went hitting boost, then when it comes out of the hole. Not being used to that kinda threshold, it would be hard to tell 7psi to 15, or whenever it went pop.
We'll get it back together, and go piss off more race cars.

It will take better than a 7.1 in the 1/8th to get you in that elusive 10 second zone. Your MPH is great for a 7.1 and you were probably in the 11.15 zone in the quarter. I have gone as quick as 7.126 @ 96.22 in the 1/8th which resulted in a 11.24, but I was out of gear and need to change to a 3.89.

I would go ahead and replace the block while your swapping pistons That way you can really throw the boost to it without worrying about splitting your lifter galley in half.

I bet that thing is a blast to drive with the boost.

It was more than likely an 11.0-11.1 second run but with the top end charge of a turbo it is possible to see that elusive 10.99. There are some cars on Corral that run 7.04-7.08 in the 1/8 and 10.9 quarters. They are power adder cars.


Get if fixed and work out the bugs and it should fly. I can't wait to see the new times. Pissing off race cars would be fun!

Think so. It's got a spring for like 7.8 I think... But he's doing the whole 10 and 2 on the wheel and a little timid right. I kept asking him what the car was doing, what the LM-1 showed, when it spooled. He kept telling me he just squeezed the steering wheel and wanted to keep it straight.
I'll be there again soon. Gonna hit mine with 15-20 psi, see what I can break.
