WHAT ABOUT THIS CAM

I'm rebuilding a 351 W. I need help choosing a cam. The engine will have a 600 Holley, Performer Intake, stock valves and springs with gasket matched ports, headers, bored .030 over, c-4 transmission with stock converter and 325 gears. Comp Cams sell a 268H that has an advertised duration of 268/268 and 218/218 at .050. The lift is 456/456 and 110 degrees lobe seperation. I don't mind a slightly rough idle. Is this a good cam or should I go one way or the other. Thanks.

that cam looks like a pretty good match to me, the tight lobe seperation should give it somewhat of a rumpy idle, if you listen close enough. What is the compression? If its between 9.5 and 10:1, I'd seriously consider going up a notch or two on cam size.

the he268h is a very good street cam. you might consider the 270 magnum though if you want more mid range and top end though. i would however replace the valve springs with those recommended by comp cams.

I am in the same boat as you. I am down to pulling the short block apart and already dreaming about a new cam. I had a recommendation of using the Comp Cams FW XE256H-10 grind for a build very similar to your but am still on the fence. Let me know what you deceide as it may help me make a decision as I get closer to putting mine together.

I forgot about the compression. I don't have my pistons yet but I'd like it to be at least 9.5 or a little higher. The cam that Comp Cams recommended for me seemed a little conservative too. I'm going to go with at least that much cam or a little more. I won't be able to put new springs on it because I'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible and still be dependable. Thanks for the input.

According to a book I'm reading (HOW TO POWER TUNE FORD V8) a .475 lift is the max I can use with stock rockers and still have correct valve train geometry. Is this correct? Does anybody know how much lift that the stock springs will take?

Stock springs will usually work with up to about .500-.525 lift. But your springs are 30-something years old, they need to be replaced, regardless of the cam. The 268H is pretty much what's considered an RV type cam. Good for bottom to mid range grunt. Only watch your compression ratio with it. don't go above 9-9.5 to 1, or you'll have a motor that likes midgrade to premium gas.
