What AFR head setup to get?

165 or 185? mods in sig below... What would best benefit my setup? And what rwhp would be expected on the install? Thanks guys!

For my money on a near stock displacement N/A motor, I'm going with the 165's. Yeah, 185's will obviously flow better, but I've seen the 165's support 400hp on a n/a 5.0 engine in a Car Craft article a while back. Don't know why some people feel the need to always go with the bigger head. Plus the 165's would be much nicer if your car is driven on the street a lot.

yes.... i want heads that will be on there for years, be daily driven, occationally beaten on... but not something i have to do mantain every year... or every few years... I want a pretty much bolt on and go head that will last a very long time... And good for daily driver applications...

For daily driving go with the 58cc AFR 165 heads. I LOVE mine and yes, I'm over 400 BHP naturally aspirated on a 302 block. The 165 heads have a much better lower end to them, think of traffic... nuff said.

Well, using VirtualEngine2000 and plugging in all the specs for the parts I have, including flow data for my AFR 165's, I'm running 422 BHP and 423 on torque. It's also still a great daily driver, except for the really stiff clutch...

I say about 330 rear wheel horse power. I'd look into getting a custom cam it's all about the TQ curve.

Whats the cheapest you have seen afr 165 heads? i need to know to start saving in the "afr account"

Off the top of my head about 1200 bucks for AFR heads. About 300 bucks for a custom cam.

Last time I checked, 165s were 1325 from Ed Curtis. 325 for one of his custom cams

I agree, 165's if going supercharged maybe 185's but for what you have now 165's would be the best way to go.

My combination is way different from your my friend....Do you get 5.0 MUSTANG & SUPERFORDS Go to issue march of 2002 page #131 and then tell me how i got 380RWHP.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned this yet, and since you have a new 306 this may not apply, but 185's will nessicitate flycutting your pistons if they are anything like stock.

In the MM&FF issue they had a 306 with the 185 heads milled to 58cc's and a off the shelf comp cam and they did have to notch the pistons some and that combination made 455 HP at the crank.
