What cam should I get??

Ok, here's what I got. Just picked up a set of GT-40s, ported and polished (thanks brian!) and I'm going to be putting them on, and putting a cam in at the same time. Here is what I have:

302HO
Professional Products 75mm throttle body
Professional products typhoon upper and lower intake manifold
GT40s
Possibly 1.7 rockers (If I can get away with the lift)
JBA Shorties
4.10 gears.

Any good reccomendations for a cam? I've looked at a couple, I'm not really worried about idle as much as squeezing some good performance out of it. I'm thinking of going pretty big, but I want to weigh my options, and of course get the advice of other stangers and professionals.

Some people who know far more than I, have had real good luck with the Trick Flow stage 1 and stage 2 cams....

I like my Lunati 51017, but thats just me.

Crane makes some great ones that go with the gt40s that is what I had planned to use with those heads...gt40s are what come on the cobras and a lot of cobra guys like those crane cams...

i'm shure if ya call the cam manurfacture's and tell them your combo they can hook ya up with the right one or give AFP a gingle. need some instal help? peace

call Comp Cams tech line. They will talk to about your combo and what kind of "every day" driving that you plan on doing.
They have a very large range of 5.0 cam grinds to select from. Not to mention, roller rockers, puch rods, and matching vavle springs for the cam.

You need to make the decision on the 1.7's before you order the cam. I'd suggest you just order a cam with the lift you want and use 1.6's. What kind of driving will you be doing and what are your performance goals? Based on the parts you've chosen, it would appear that money is a consideration, so don't go too big on the cam. Such a cam would require more rpm; it would tax the limits of your other parts, and it would require a chip or other tuning aids.

I really like my TFS stage 1 cam the stage 2 wont fit with out the pistons being fly cut. I asked Jeff a couple weeks ago cause I had some plan's for this coming winter that involed that cam but not anymore I dont really feel like cutting my brand new pistons. I say go with a TFS stage 1 cam its a great cam has .499lift with 1.6 rockers.

Give Delta Cam a Call they are here in Tacoma (Your in OR, but that is closer than crame, comp etc..) Talk to Jerry, let him know what you have, what you want etc. He will help you with a cam and can custom grind it for you and ship next day. Prices are MUCH better than the Big houses too.. I bet under $200 for a fresh billet custom grind shipped ground. (you should see it 2days after order)

Im also thinking about a new cam. I need a few mor revs.
I have now crower 11511 grind 218/224@.050 468/486 lift. 114deg. sl
thinking about 222/226 @ .050 and .500 lift but not shure if it will pass emisions with this much dur.
But if you would like to try my crower its yours for $70 not many miles on it.
Could also sell you my 1.70 roller rockers, as im going to need 1.6`s

Call me old school but a 2031 crane cam works great for what your looking to do. Nice sound with a great power curve.

My neighbor went to your Firecrest trans guy (can't remember his name) who subsequently examined the twice broken trans. He is now rebuilding the trans. Are you getting a higher stall converter along with the bigger cam? That same neighbor came over yesterday to inquire about my cam. He thought I was running a solid roller. He was surprised to learn it was a cheapo hydraulic flat tappet. Anyway, he was running a .620 260 duration, and wearing down cam lobes in minutes. I talked him into a milder cam.

Good, Kerry will treat him right on the tranny.
And yes im pulling the engine this winter and will change the stall to 2500 min.
along with the cam change I may need to do pistons (TW pistons) for V to P clearance.
Just thought someone may be interested in my crower cam, crane rockers.
Let me know what you decide on your cam.

The Trick Flow 1 & 2 cams are pretty good and they are one of the cheapest. I ran a Comp and had nothing but good luck with it.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how to get my hands on one before the weekend, but I dont think its going to happen. I'll probably order it and have it shipped to work. Got springs in stock? haha

If it helps at all, I will be driving thru that area on the way to Lebanon saturday morning/afternoon and then again around 1:00am on the way back. I would be happy to deliver if you need it (and we have it ) I have a very hard time driving past the Frys exit without stopping anyway

Well I decided on the TF stage one (thanks jeff for swinging it by!!), got way too many reccomendations on it. Its going to give me the power right in the range I want, and from the several reviews on the net, the idle and driveability are good, so I'll be putting it in along with the head swap. Hopefully I can make another run before the year's end to see how it does.

Glad to hear you got a cam. The engine combo I have in my '95 GT is very similar to what you are about to build. It made very respectable power, considering I spent $1,000 on everything. After a few small changes recently, I should hit about 290rwhp and 335rwtq. Good luck! Are you going to be running slicks or drag radials if you make it to the track? You'll need one or the other.

advance the stage 2-4 degrees. itll give you better low end and the cam will still pull like crazy up top
