What clutch ?????

I am looking at the King Cobra or the Ram clutch kit. The King Cobra is rated to 400hp and the RAM is rated to 550hp. I have AFR 165cc heads, Edelbrock intake, Comp XE270hr cam, and it is estimated around 300RWHP. I also may be putting on a blower in the future. I am leaning toward the RAM, but would like some insight on some guys who have already ran these clutches. These are around the same price and it seems like the RAM is the better choice if I am going to upgrade to a blower down the road. :flag:

my buddy just did a spec clutch and it works awsome hes had lots of foxes and the spec works by far the best the damn thing is nice and easy like its hydrolic nice and easy but damn it grabs like a bitch hes running 10.5 on slicks and he used there light billit flywheel figured id give my 2 cents since knowone else seems to want to help any one on this site

You will get more hits on this subject in the 5.0 Tech section, this section is for Tuning.

As far as the clutch goes, I'm not really familiar with the ones you mentioned. My buddy had a Centerforce Dual Friction in his car, which was around the same rwhp as yours. Unfortunately, it looks like the clutch was not engaging fully, and it ended up getting burnt up in less than 3k miles, but it doesn't seem to be the clutch's fault. When it was new, that thing grabbed hard, and clutch pedal felt no different than my stocker.

Thanks for the tip. I should have posted this in the tech section.

IMO, I would go with a SPEC 3 since you are planning a blower in the future. I've heard nothing but good things about SPEC 3's. I know quite a few guys who are running 500 + with SPEC 3's with no problem.

Good luck :nice:

I had a centerforce dual friction in my '66, and ended up ripping all the friction material off one side of the disc. I wasn't happy, that was an expensive clutch...

Replaced it with a Ram "PowerGrip" clutch, which I am still running. It holds good, but when it gets warm, it chatters REALLY bad when you let the pedal out. Ram said it "chatters" some, and they weren't kidding.

I had a KC clutch in my '90 with a '94 cobra motor, E303, intake, exhaust, etc. I had no complaints about the KC clutch at all.

The Ram in my '66 works fine, but the chatter is really annoying.

I don't know anything about the spec clutch, but it sounds like people have had good luck with it. Maybe that would be your best bet?

I like my SPEC stg 2, it had a little chatter during break-in but hooks good however I wish I had read about their crappy TOB's before install because I am proof that they do suck, less than a 1000 miles since install and car is laid down in the garage waiting for new TOB and possibly pressure plate(chirping noise turned to grinding noise during last blast in it):nonono:

I too ran a KC on a H/C/I street car that made a hair over 300 to the wheels. The KC took at least 50 5000 rpm clutch drops on ET streets at the track and never made a whimper. The pedal feel was awesome and I had no complaints with it. If your going to go with a blower one day though you might want too look into the SPEC for sure, it sounds like it might be more for you.

I am also running the SPEC stage II and its a great clutch. The clutch did have a little chatter during break in as others mentioned and it does chatter a little bit when its cold...but barely noticeable. The clutch grabs like a Mo-Fo and has yet to slip even when hot. The pedal action is extremely precise in terms of the engagement point...and the pedal is noticeably heavier than stock but still completely bareable for DD usage. I really like the spec clutches and i have heard great things in terms of long term usage and high mileage figures. I am currently using an adj quad and FWA so its very easy to control where it engages. i would stay away from RAM. good luck man
