what color silicone to use on timing cover and WP gaskets??

i have been having some trouble getting rid of water leaks. i need an idea on what to use.

Your water pump gasket should not need any sealer. Where are you leaking coolant from on the front cover????

I use permatex black with the small brush. Used on both the timing cover and water pump gaskets and no leaks. I also opened the waterpump and removed the gasket that came from the factory and put permatex on that also. Might not have to but it doesnt hurt!

i am not sure where its coming from exactly. it looks liked it coming from those small holes on the TC, the ones not used for anything. if you know what ones i am talking about. its not a bad leak but it pools up a little bit on the TC

i just always use RTV that specifically said what it's use was for, water pump, thermostat housing, etc. no problems so far.....

Something is wrong if you are leaking and have applied RTV to your gaskets, the color doesn't matter; i can make beer green, it will taste the same, i will still drink it.

check your thermostat housing to see if it's leaking...i had the same problem and it drove me NUTS. found out the chrome t-stat housings are usually not perfectly flat

I 2nd that.... I have noticed-Once you take the chrome ones off and put the back on-They will leak.

RTV. Also, the chrome housings usually leak from the plating process. Ask me how I know...Went with a regular cast one, and no problems.

ditto. Only thing, i need the chrome housing, only because it has a 3/8 threaded insert for my MK8 fan set up regarding the sender. If not-I'd junkit and run the stocker.

the water neck isnt leaking. i havent messed with my car all week. i will probably just take it all off and put new gaskets on, its all torn down with the heads off anyways so it'll be easy.

i think my problem may be the way i put the silicone on. when i put them on i just torqued it all down with the silicone still wet. should i let it tack up for a while before i bolt it down??

I use brush tac that is made by permatex on the paper gaskets for the timing cover and water pump, haven't had one leak yet. Its nasty brown in color and will stain your hands, but seals great.

I just drilled and tapped the stocker!

Motorcraft TA-31 gray. Can be used on anything from t-stat housings, oil pans, dif covers, ect. I used it and a piece of a tin can to cover a hole in an automatic transmission and it is still holding solid after 70k miles.

After I tracked down all the measurable visible leaks I still had one I could never find which was miniscule but still irritating. Like add 2-3oz every month. I think it might actually have been in the heater core because it's buried away but never saw any water.

I put in 1/2 a container of the aluminum powder per instructions and it went away forever

In answer to your original question I only use Permatex Black non-hardening for everything - if for no other reason it holds the gasket on perfectly. Cleans up with alcohol.

I don't know where the guy got it but I had a paper gasket actually get wet and disintegrate once so I had to replace it.
