My friend has a 95 camaro z28, lt1, automatic. The only thing he has is a functional hood. I have a 94 gt, 5 speed, hurst shifter, 3.55 gears, cold air intake, off road h pipe, and flowmasters. What will i need to do to beat him. I dont care if its by a fender, i need to beat him. He is one cocky person and he thinks he could beat me no matter what. I dont want to get deep into my car right now but i want it to beat a auto z28. I thought about getting pullies, smog elim, slp catback, control arms, and maybe a eibach drag launch kit. I will also do a good tune up. spark plugs, plug wires, coil, dist cap and rotor, and k&n air filter for hte cold air. I should be able to take him with all this shouldnt I. If not what else will I need. I know them z28s cant be too fast. Thanx for your info.

Read this thread first... it's one i started in Talk a lil while ago

then check out my sig...

I've got U/L gt40
gt40 iron heads
3.55's
k&n
65mm TB ...umm ya, check my sig... and i lost... i think 2-3 shift killed me
but i don't know if you can do it with the thngs you listed... and mabye im wrong...the 95 ls1 ... i dunno if the 98or 99 was something different?

are you sure it's an ls1 ..a kid at my school had a 95 z28 i think with a vette motor of the same year... lt1 ls1 ws6, i dunno what they are...

but ya, you'll prolly need at least h/c/i

you racing on street or track? i seen a 94 lt1 auto run 13.99 with stock everything including gears...
take out your seats, spare tire, jack, etc to help a lil i suppose
or if you want to do it simple just put a 100shot in your car and you'll be good to go heh

A '95 z28 would be an LT1. A decent motor, but not as deadly as a LS1. WS6 is a Firebird performance package. At least he will have some power losses through the auto, but you need to be quick at shifting or that will screw you.

Just to give you an idea of what the stock LT1 is capable of: I ran my buddies stock Caprice (4500 lb car). His driveline was a stock LT1, stock exhaust. 4L60E tranny (electric 700R4), and 3.08 rear gears and an open diff.

My mostly stock '94 GT (cold-air, t5, 2.73 limited slip rear) ran dead even with a poor launch (15.1 second 1/4 mile). If I launched better, I would have done better to about a 14.9 second 1/4.

Now, you're talking about a Camaro with pretty much identical drivetrain and it weighs about 1000 lbs less than the Caprice. That's probably a low 14 second or high 13 second car there.

Just an FYI.

Looks like a couple of low 14 second cars. Take out your spare, all other crap in your trunk, and back seat. Make sure she's running as good as possible maintinence wise, go out there and stick your launch.

Right now you should be very close to a stock auto LT1 car if you can drive. The pullies and suspension will help, as will any wieght reduction you can do. If you can hook up off the line, you should be able to win.

When I went to the track a couple years ago, I raced a couple LT1's and lost every time. But, after some practice I had a slightly better time than them at the end of night. With a 1.90 or better 60', I know I could have beat them easily. Best I got was 2.06.

LT1 is at an advantage on the launch being an auto. He doesn't need stick because he's got 330ft pounds of stang eating torque 2000 rpm. I would recommend nitrous. Seen too many blown off the road by those Z28's.

:Word:
my buddy just did a stock rebuild on his 96(lt1) with a cam, and exhaust. stock heads, headers, airbox, etc.... he put out slightly less hp/same torque as my 95.

here is the kicker though, his torque curve was much flatter. he had over 300lb ft from 2200-5100, where as mine peaked over 300 to 320 and fell back below 300 within 1500rpms. we have yet to race, he has 4.10's and a 6spd so it should be a good race.

oh yeah, lca's, dr's, pullies, and it should come down to your driving ability.

I have always wondered about that. It seemed my buddies lt1 had a torque curve that never let up. That explains it.

A '94 GT's going to need more mod's then what you mentioned to to take the old LT1. The LT1 were slaughtering the GT's of there day.

Maybe a power adder, Supercahrger or NOS will put you in the Camaro's territory.

If you come accross a Camraro from 1998 or newer, just forget about racing him. The LS1's were basically unstoppable :(

I have a 95 GTS with 5 spd, exhaust, smog delete, kn, and i beat a 96 lt1 camaro 5 spd, im not sure what was done to it, we raced from a 20 mph roll, but i had him by two cars at 80 were we let off
Russell
BTW my car ran a 14.6 with a 2.45 60 '

Wow! Some of you guys are really afraid of those Camaro's.

Since your racing an LT1 auto camaro get some good rubber, advance your timing and practice launching at 4500 RPM or 5000 RPM that will put you in the lead right off the line and he'll have to play catch up. And if hes a crap talker like you said he is, when he see you in frount he will prolly panic gun the gas and lose traction giving you the win. I've won a few races that way beating cars that I had no business being on the track with.(Theirs nothing like beating a superior car)

If thats not enough strap on a 100hp shot and call it a day.

Have fun

well guys, i raced him. The outcome was as suspected. The first race, i had a horrible takeoff and he beat me by about a car and half. The second raced, i had a decent take off and i beat him by a fender. The third race, bad takeoff, lost by a car. The fourth race, i had the best takeoff all night and was ahead by like 2 cars and went to shift into second, and the syncro started acting up again and wouldnt go in 2nd. The fifth race was the same. I had him good off the line and couldnt shift to second to save my life. Got home and realized i bent a shifter bolt. The bolt that holds the handle to the base was bent and wasnt holding the shifter handle on there good. I think that might be why it grinded the last races. I have to shift hard into second or it grinds and i think i didnt shift hard enough cause of the handle.

These races where with my car as is. 3.55 gears, cold air, off road h, and flows. I think if i get pullies, trickflow track heat , 70 mm tb, and advance my timing, i should beat him by a couple of cars. I think that functional hood helped him out alot. I can get him in an 1/8 mile but when he starts picking up speed, more air helps him pass me before the end of the 1/4.

BTW. I drove his car and its the hardest shifting auto i have ever drove. He had another car with a shift kit and the new one shifts better than it did. He said when he bought hte car, they said it had a rebuilt tranny but didnt say it had a shift kit. I think it does though, since it can cross up shifting into 3rd. His car also has nittos drs. They are bald after last night though.
