Most of the tiny towns along hwy 30 have stations near the interstate, and the small ones have convenience stores still in town. North Platte stations have the advertised price at one or two pumps only. They caught state flack for false advertising, then it was reduced to poor signage of the magic pumps. It’s been a while since I went to Scottsblugg/Gering. But there is a lot of open roads up to Hemmingford..

I'm sure there are firearm instructors in FL that would help you with it, just ask at any gun store. I could teach you myself if I lived in your area.
I saw in your other post you already have a handgun. Those are great for home defense, too! A long gun is easier to aim and hit with at longer ranges.

Lack of skills is easy to fix. Stupidity... not so much.

gun safety is first and foremost on my mind, I have no issue there, all the houses around us are block homes so that cuts down on the stray shot thing some what, I'm that guy that empties the clip at an intruder, I just want to impose that 'aw' factor when the intruder sees the shotgun barrel.
I picture myself yelling 'SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND' when confronted.
I, in reality, hope it never comes to that, I hear it's really messy.

Even if it's a "perfect shoot" situation, it will be messy, in several different ways. The important thing is that you and your family are safe and healthy when it's over.
Messy= Investigation, Clean-up, possible charges, possible lawsuits, gun confiscated and eventually (hopefully) returned, mental stress... Yeah, no fun.

I’ve seen bird bird and larger shot vs. sheetrock tests. (Probably now available on YouTube.) Not sending projectiles through the neighbor’s house is a wise idea.
The local 4-H has shooting sports with very experienced trainers. If my kids put a hole in something, it will not likely be an accident.

If they have shotgun season again this year, I need to go and stand in rotation for better pigeon shooting skills. I would not win a blue rock shoot if my son is having a good day. Something slower, I’d still win.

If anyone still watches this thread, I got a surprise gift I would like to share about.
I was not coming up with good ideas for my Christmas list, and I refuse to go down the tie and sock road, especially since I don't have anyplace I need a tie for very often anymore and can buy my own socks.
So knowing my dad had not used any of Grandpa's or his rifles since Grandpa had a stroke and we took inventory, (he's been gone for probably a decade.), I asked for preferably the Enfield rifle (1917 or an SMLE, I could not remember after seeing it once, but functional history is cool!) or the sporterized Japanese 6.5 I had put stock steel sights back on about ten years ago and we have never tested out again..
Grandpa did shoot shotguns, but I do not think he went hunting for other than birds and home defense.
So, I openeed the box that has the ammo, and there are some .303 brass and loaded rounds, then 4 full 30.06 boxes and an almost full one, from about 1970. And there are two boxy clips (I don't thunk they qualify as magazines or stripper clips) with rounds in them. So I was wondering what?? At that point.
Then I get the gun bag, and it's the rifle still with the $75 tag from the sporting goods shop cir. 1970 on the trigger guard. And it has a much, much newer scope on it. The only wear to the bluing is on the trigger guard from the zipper. (It might be black paint off a brass guard,) The stock is like new, and is not anything military. I see a serial number, but no brand stamp lime I was sure is on the Enfeld.
So, I need to see if I got a much nicer, or at least less used hunting rifle, what the heck it is, and that I know how to load and unload etc before heading out to the shooting range. I will post pics if I cannot figure out what I got in the next few days.
I wanted something bigger than the 10-22. for the coyotes, Bob the cats puma sightings, and missing guard cats. (No Cougar is going to mess with our show and pet dogs.) I think I got it. I just do not know what I have, yet.
I’m taking a quick break to play with my gift. So what do I have?

So, I have two clips (?) with 8 rounds a piece. The letters in the circle are S I 3. And they have loads that are longer than the Springfield 30-06 (125 grain pointed soft point index 6230) rounds. Almost 3 3/16”overall, the copper jacket slug sticks out about 7/8”, and has L C 9(?) 5 on the butt end of the brass.
I will try to post a pic of a rounds next to the Remington 30-06. (They are 3 1/32” and are in a similar diameter case and length with different taper necks.)
I also have some 30-30 Winchester brass that is definitely shorter.

Is there a question? I wasn't sure.

Those are 7.62 ball ammo (NATO) rounds and the clip is for an M1 Garand.

WTH? is in the first post. I probably forgot to type it again.
Thanks for the confirmation on the M1 Garand clip and rounds. I have read about the clips that clink, but not seen them in person before. Or I have, but was too busy playing Taps, and the squad already had their rifles ready.

The other 30-06 loads are varmit loads. If the rifle is a newer 30-06 bolt action rifle like I think it is, the NATO rounds are supposed to be more accurate than the varmit loads. (But the newer rounds should not go in an older M1 Garand.)

Next question, what non military hunting rounds are good for a 30-06? What about less expensive target loads?

So what kind of rifle is this? Under and behind the front scope mount it says
MO
ED
Then the six digit serial number that is not covered.
I’d rather not take the scope mount off today to read what the rest of the two lines are.
The bolt lever is different than what is coming up in a search for 30-06 bolt rifle. The $75 price tag is from cir. 1970. The scope is a newer Tasco. Thanks.

Bump.
Please help ID this rifle. Please do not make me take the scope mount off. I want to make sure I know how to operate this, if the thumb operated lever on the right is a safety, and how to get a misfire out, (do I trust ammo older than me that’s stayed dry?) before driving to the pasture in another county.

And I’d like to know how to properly disassemble it for cleaning afterwards. This is not quite like the 22’s or my 12 ga. Hopefully an ID will make finding the info easy.
Thanks if you can help.

Shooting old ammo is not a problem if it was stored correctly.
Sorry, no idea on the ID.

The boxes apparently kept dry, the brass is not badly oxidized. But it surely was not in an airtight container under the stairs.

Now after cycling the M1 ammo through, 4 rounds at a time with the bolt, but not firing it, I jammed it up this evening. (Yes, my new toy lasted longer than Christmas Day before I broke it.)
I loaded two empty cartridges so a dry fire would not hurt the firing pin and I could see if the thumb lever was a safety. Now the dang bolt is not moving.

For now I will have to hit a coyote or Bob the cat with a baseball bat or or the precision air rifle and make sure it’s a great shot.

I don't think that that is the stock that came originally on the gun.

That said, I still don't know. The metal bits are all rounded like Springfield or Mouser with machined scope mount receivers. The back portion looks like a Remington so...

Post some more pics with the bolt open.

It looks like it has been re-barreled. The barrel and front sight appear to be a later era of machining.

It might be why you're having a difficult time with the ID.

The portion that is missing for a Springfield is the button on the rear of the bolt. That could have been changed too though.

Oh, but I initially came in here to post a picture of my cat:

and her M1 Garand.

The peep sites on this gun are pretty good but she likes the eye relief scope even better.

Your cat has a nice looking rifle. The metal bits I have look a lot different than your M1 Garand or the M1 salute guns.

If this was sporterized, it could be a former military rifle. And if it came through the CMP, it could look near new. But that’s speculation. The short, squared bolt lever is not matching up with Duck Duck images.

As far as the bolt opening, that’s now a problem. At this point, I might end up going to the store downtown Tuesday and risk them laughing at me to get the empty shell out that’s stopped up the action. Cabelas is an option, too, but if they have ammo and info at a comparable price, I think the big store will survive without this business.

That's what I was thinking too. At least the caliber helps to narrow down the century and somewhat, country of origin.

I'll send your images to my Dad. He's forgotten more than I'll ever know.

I don't think that is a military rifle. It could be. I just don't think so. Old military stuff usually has serial numbers on multiple parts. You should be able to easily remove the stock to check for proof marks or other identifiers. The stock should come off by removing one screw on the bottom of the stock forward of the magazine well.

What did you do to jam the rifle. Will the bolt handle move but the case is stuck or will it not do anything?

As for old ammo. Worst thing that will happen is getting a bullet stuck in the barrel. If you shoot the old ammo and the bang doesn't sound right open the bolt, clear the chamber and check the barrel. If you cant see down it you have a problem. If you do get one stuck go to Lowes and get a dowel rod. Use it and a hammer to push the round back out of the barrel. If it's close to the end of the barrel you might have to take it to a gun Smith to have it extracted. You can buy the tools to do it yourself if you want.

The thing is: If it's a new barrel then a large portion of that serial number stuff is gone. All the other stuff went buh-bai with the original rifle stock (that was probably used/abused/destroyed).

For instance:

With a new barrel and stock... Could be a lotta things

I get that. That's why I said I don't think. I'm dumb what do I know. Anyway, the action should be easy to remove. If its military it should have something on the receiver. A Mauser has what 20 parts with a serial number? Different gun. Different Era. I understand that, but it's one screw and can be done in under a minute.

I'm guessing if the action is locked up he either has the wrong ammo or old swelled ammo.

The clips definitely look like M1 clips though.

If only I was closer to him. Putting hands on it would make this so much easier!

Ok, I will put what I did again. The MI spec rounds stack into the bottom of the gun with the bolt open four at a time, and cycled fine (without firing) with the bolt.
So, next I put in two empty brass cartridges instead. (I wanted to see if the thumb lever is a safety, and did not want to have the firing pin to hit something besides brass.)
I pulled the trigger, it went click, and the bolt handle will not rotate. So the bolt is now stuck.

A cleaning rod for the .22 or 12 ga should be long enough to see if the empty brass is jammed. A dowel rod and some orange )or blue) loctite would be worth a trip to town before it storms so I can put the scope mount on again securely. I really did not want to tear it apart before first using. My work bench is buried, and my kid has a model on the inside hobby table.
