What Do You Carry And Why?

not surprising ... probably drifting down the North Platte river valley out of the hill country - they are called the Wild Cats
I left that area in the '80's and was never too surprised to see tracks in the winter or snakes in the summer

I got a reprinted manual for the 30-06. (An eBay seller in CO.) It’s on thick, heavy paper and not a bad copy. I’m not sure it’s as helpful in the tear down section as I wanted, but it has other useful info.
It has a list of grain loads and bullet types for different game.
AND - The 30-06 is rated for all big game, except for Elephants and Rhinoceroses. So I will have to get Gary Larson’s help if any stop by.

I was looking for 20 ga target loads at a Bass Pro Shop/Cabelas. They had about every round available except 20 ga, and only a few boxes of 12 ga. The kid at the register, (with a top of the head, short pony tail instead of a man bun, and looked like a malnourished vegan), asked if I found everything. I told him I really needed 20 ga shotgun shells for the blue rock shoot that evening. I got a blank look. I said you know, skeet or trap shooting? Nope.
I had to explain it, and he that sounds like fun, but had never heard of it.
At least he was good with the register.
The local places were also out, and I gave up and went to Wal-Mart. The Only ammo they had in their decimated section was target loads for 12 and 20 ga.

my first job (requiring a social security card) was at a skeet range back in '64 working the low house, 'MARK', and trap house
the high house guy quit and one weekend I ran back & forth loading but that thankfully didn't last so we just offered the trap shoot
I was 11 yrs. old and thought I was big stuff working - still remember the first paycheck and my Dad explaining taxes

When I lived in Baton Rouge I got invited to a Spring/Summer Wednesday after work shoot. One of the guys had more money than he could spend and had put in a privet range. It had 8 stations in a simi circle and a nice covered area where everybody would hangout. It was a ton of fun. Just some good old boys hanging out cooking good food and chewing the fat. Wish I could still go. I've always like shooting trap. My favorite is sporting clays where you ride around on a golf cart and go to different stations in the woods. Normally a 100 round course. I haven't shoot anything much in the last couple of years. I've got plenty of ammo, but it hurts just thinking about having to replace it!

This is a Smith and Wesson Lady Smith from around 1912. It fires black powder 22 long. I've never shot it, but it's in good working order. Smith hired jewelers to assemble them. 20220624_215739.webp 20220624_215643.webp This is a Colt 41 caliber rim fire from around 1898.

Haven't shot it either. Last I checked ammonwas around $40 a round. It's all collectable stuff at this point. I like old :poo: I guess.
