what do you do for the snow?

Hey, I was wondering what you all do for the snow?

I plan on putting some winter tires on my stock wheels, and putting some form of weight in the rear.

I don't have the option of another car so I have to make do with the mustang.

It doesn't get too bad where I'm from, but I just want to want to make sure I can do all I can to protect it [besides buying a winter beater]

Where do you live? I'm in chicago and run michelin x-ice tires on my car (new not tested in the snow yet). No big snow yet but the grip in the 35 deg. rain we have had is great. No weight in the trunk either. If you have stock brakes get some 16's as tires are much cheaper. I run a 225/55/17 on my 98 cobra wheels and I got out of the tire shop for $602 out the door. I cant run a 16" wheel in the front or rear so I had to get tires for 17's. But yea run a narrower winter tire than your summer tire also, narrow tires can bite deeper into the snow. Eg. my winter is a 225 width and my summer is a 275 width. Get some good snows for the winter and you will be golden, I get by with 350+ rwhp. If you have 16's I bet you could be out of the tire shop for $450 or less.

just drive carefully. i run my nitto 555r tires all year. i dont change a thing on my car when winter comes. i just am always extra cautious and i always drive over-geared so that i wont slip out when i step on the gas.

I live in central NJ, its not really that bad, like, it doesn't snow often,but when it does. it usually comes down. I'm sure not as bad alot of people have to deal with but still.

I have the stock brakes, but, I only have the tribars, and the bullits. I don't have the cash to throw on other rims unfortunately. My main rims have 235s on them [stock from a 2006 mustang]
I can most likely get a real good deal on snow tires, my dad used to be one of the bigger mechanics in my area, and he still talks to his old tire supplier and he hooks me up alot.

yeah, I'm just worried because this car is still semi new to me. I'm somewhat used to it, but I don't know how its going to handle in the snow, and I don't wanna wait until first snowfall to find out something I could of done to help handling.

probably a pretty dumb question, but for snowfall, better to start off in 2nd?

I have stock gears and no go mods.

in any type of rain or snow my car stays parked in the driveway and i roll around in my hunk of crap 257,000 + mile '94 altima. having another daily driver beater is the only way to fly when u have a stang!!!!!

Yea, starting in 2nd is a good idea. I've driven my car in the snow twice, and I will never do it again. I know how to handle it, and I got by but its not worth the risk because I don't have collision insurance on the car god forbid anything ever happen. Plus my brother just got a Wrangler and doesn't get his license until May '08 so I can just drive that in the snow.

FWIW, I've heard that Blizzaks are also pretty beastly snow tires. I'm sure you can find some waffles or v6 wheels for under $100 for the set, and just get some 215/50/16 snows or something. It'll probably be cheaper for you to get ****ty wheels and snows for 16" wheels rather than snows for 17" wheels.

Senior year of Highschool, it snowed like 8 inches during class and they had to let us out. It was hilarious, every rwd car got stuck in the parking lot (including me).

I've driven in about 3 inches of snow and I'll never do it again, especially having 4.10 gears. I don't recommend driving in the snow at all, but if you HAVE to, I guess your best bet is to get winter tires.

yeah, I know one ting I want to save up for is a beater.

just my income is very limited, so basically any money I do get, is towards the stang or food.

i'd like to put full coverage on the stang, but I can't until I start making more.

I'm a senior in highschool right now, and alot of the cars are lowered to the ground with tiny tires on them. I think its going to be pretty damn hillarious watching them all trying to leave with their snowplow front bumpers.

I drive my 4x4 Oldsmobile Bravada (that I'm probably replacing with an 04 Z71 Tahoe)

I did drive 2 different Mustangs in the snow before I got wise. Plan on it taking at least twice as long to get anywhere, and just be careful, and you should be fine. I'm also in Chicagoland by go-stang5.0 and 87 GT, and I've never had a winter that was too bad once the roads were plowed or salted.

my nitto 555's are HORRIBLE in the snow!! i got stuck in my driveway when there was 2" of snow just backing it out of the garage

I just got done washing and waxing my car too, even though its freezing out. I'm dedicated.

i'd like to get a older ford truck for my winter beater, and to be able to haul stuff when I need to like when I go to swap meets and such.

applying for a new job tomorrow, at the most up to date body shop in central new jersey, so we'll see how that goes, and maybe I can go for a winter beater in a month or so, [that is if its still crappy out, if not i'll put the money aside for next winter]

i run continetal extream contacts, 275 40 17. full tank of gas, i put timing, cut some trans shift pressure so its softer, and usualy start in 2nd gear she goes pretty good.

Snows not that bad. I might try and do an ice autocross this winter on a frozen lake in michigan. And yes its a real event held by certain car clubs (forget which ones right now).

If I like it, my racing season me last the entire year.

I'm not one to pamper a car but I do maintain it and keep it clean. People list cars as "Never seen snow"... so what. A car driven in snow (even on salted roads) can be kept up with proper cleaning. There was one guy on here once who bought a "No Snow" california car but the trunk and rear frame rails were like completely rotted out prolly from sitting by the ocean. As grady would say:Word:
