What does it take to run with the 03/04 cobra

On the freeway more specifically...
will a vortech/H/C/I car run with one on the freeway? I've seen lots of vids of 5.0 cars that will run with them from a dig, but KB cobras hall ass. What should i look for to be able to run with one from a 100mph start?

A HCI blown 5.0 will hang with a STOCK 03/04, but a kenne bell 03/04 would walk all over a decent HCI blown 5.0. Think about it, a kenne bell 03/04 usually puts down around 625 to the wheels and a typical HCI blown 5.0 puts down around 425 to the wheels. That is quite a difference. A positive displacement blower will also rap them in the lower rpms.

I would say that a light 500 rwhp turbo 5.0 would be a good match with an kenne bell 03/04. I'll let you know in a few weeks.

Stock they run about 112mph, so a HCI centri blower 5.0 should be well into the 116 mph range. From a highway roll I'd say unless the Cobra has a KB, the Eaton gets hot pretty quickly once above 100mph and the power curve falls off a bit once it gets warm.

Also, who really cares about highway? The 03's are heavy so they need alot of power to be fast, so a typical HCI 5.0 runs high 12's which is as fast as a stock 03 coupe.

i hear ya man, i loooooove racin on the highway. first off your gonna need a diff tranny--or at least a diff 5th gear. second if you plan on racing for a good little distance then i would recommend a turbo or a cog drive setup, some meth injection and maybe a 50 shot.

last but most important you need to have balls of billet titanium as a highway race usually is not about power but how fast the other guy is willing to push it.

i would also like to add that we of the different breed do not bash you drag racers, so please leave the "who cares about the highway" comments in your head.

seriously man, if you ever run into an SLR anywhere--you should take pictures and not try to race it.

Fortunately they make power easily enough that it really doesn't matter that they're a fat heavy pig. They weigh about 350 lbs more than a 94/95 5.0, which is about 10% ... and they make more than 10% more horsepower than an H/C/I 5.0 ;). When it was stock, my Cobra beat my 310 rwhp '95 by 0.3 sec and 3 mph. $500 later, it beat it by 1.1 sec and 12 mph :D.

To the original poster...

Figure you want something that traps 118+ mph, because that's where a pullied Cobra will be (and you have to assume they all have pullies, because at this point you'll be right more often than not). With the weight difference, I'd think that 425 rwhp should even it up nicely.

And ....

Do remember how embarassing it would be to kill innocent bystanders, perhaps your girlfriend, or yourself, when something goes wrong during the race you started with that SLR at 80 mph. Perhaps just admire the purty Caddy and leave the speed run as an exercise for your imagination ;).

interesting thread. MOST stock 03s are going high 12s so a good H/C/I combo will put u right there. I know when i have been to the track i run right with stock 03s. Of course they do have the top end advantage if u want to win on the freeway u will need a blower.

Well but they are still $25k AT LEAST. $10k into a 94/95 GT will be faster than almost anything you'll encounter on the street.

Hell, a stock longblock s-trim'd 5 speed well driven 94/95GT will be as fast as a stock/relatively stock 03 cobra. Rememer that not everyone rides around on sticky tires (at 300+ rwhp you should be tho), so take advantage of that if you can. I have embaressed 03 Cobras in my car until I am midway through 2nd gear. 3700lbs + hard street tires + 420hp + IRS = crappy launch, for most drivers anyways. Just start the hazards at 40mph and you won! lol j/k

FWIW with some good driving, sticky tires, and a good tune and a couple more bolt-ons my car should (hopefully) be mid 12's. Thats with ALOT less invested thana buying a Cobra, and its paid off. :nice:

seriously, though, someone mentioned somethign about quitting saving for his blower and getting an 03/04 instead. i've noticed that the 03/04 owners are pretty cocky. hell, a lot of people can throw down the money for a car that fast out of the box (+ the money for the smaller pulley and exhaust), but not very many guys can build a car to compete w/ it. imo, you'd get more respect by building your car up, putting some sweat and even some blood into it, and whooping on the pretty boy w/ the terminator. just something to consider...

Yea the problem is the power potential of 03/04 is alot more. Ok so lets say I built a car that can outrun a stock 03/04 now that same guy just bought a pulley and I will get my ass handed to me once again with my 4000 dollar motor. That will really piss me off. Maybe I should just go ahead and buy a dart block and build a 1000hp TT car..lol

Around here its an escalation of power. One person gets a ported 04 cobra, then someone does turbo to beat him, then someone else does a dart block turbo, then dart block 427 stroker twin turbos. It never ends really. ;)

No matter what you do, someone somewhere will likely pull along side you and hand you your ass at some point in time.

lol when your crusing on the highway and you see an slr you a) cry or b) admire, somehow I dont think you will be able to match its est 208mph top speed in a mustang frame. And as for "pimp" status the thing cost a couple hundred grand and maybe a little more comfortable  .

I love the 03 cobra. If I wasnt so impatient I would save up for one of those. The car is built for speed right out of the box, saves alot of work and time. Not to mention it handles well.

Hell yeah you should. I have given a couple 03 hard runs from lights i roll with 275/40/17 nitto drags thats what i ran the times in my sig with.
