Ok, so I think my car was pinging but I'm not sure, I've never heard pinging before.

I was practicing launching on different tire pressures, and on the last launch, I heard what I would describe as a "CHING-ing" sound.

It sounded as if I set a few quarters on my rear bumper, launched, and the change hit the ground and made a sound.

Does that sound like pinging?

IMO pinging sounds like if you were to dirve down a dirt road, when bits of sand fly up and hit the body. like a sparatic(sp?) tapity tickity tap
it is best detected best when heavy load is put on the car like going up a steep hill and giving it full throttle at low rpms.
hope that helps.

My car was pinging out of nowhere last week, but its not doing it now. Must have been a bad tank of gas. To me it deffinetly sounds like its coming from under the hood, not at the back of the car. Its quite loud and sharp, usually, there is no mistaking it. As described in many past threads, it sounds like shaking a tin can with a couple marbles in it. Mine was only audible above 4200 rpm's or so.

The location of the sound apart, I can definately see how quarters bouncing off of eachother could be relayed to sounding like detonation.
