ok, i have a 98 GT. Recently my engine "threw a piston" or something to that effect, so they had to replace the engine. It was done through a warantee company and so they said that they put in an engine from a 2001 GT i believe. so i need to know how to tell if this is a 99+ motor or if it's from a 96-98????

Have you had a chance to drive it? You would notice a difference in power right away. It will be a totally different car. As per how physically you can tell it will be very hard. i can't tell the difference since my head swap by looking other than it is newer. There must be a serial number stamped on the block somewhere. If you can find it i would phone it into a ford dealership and ask them. I may be wrong but it's worth a shot.

Take a look at the intake. Measure the distance from the bottom of the intake to the bottom of the valley [top of the motor between the valve covers] if it hangs down quite low, then it's a pi, if there is a lot of space then it's non pi.

Correct me if i'm wrong (i dont think i am) but dont the 98 and older stangs have Spark Plug WIRES?
99 and up stangs use coil on plug setup, elimination the plug wires....

Yup, your right, but I believe the coils have to be switched over from the old motor, same as the fuel rails.
