What exactly is a carrier bearing?

Getting a gear install next week and want to be sure it's done right. It was reccommended to me that I get a carrier bearing to go along with my axle bearings and pinion bearings. I got one at advance and was wondering if it was the right one. I'm confused and the guy behind the counter wasn't exactly sure what I meant. He gave me what was normally called a carrier bearing, saying it had somehting to do with the back of the driveshaft or something. It's a Federal-Mogul bearing, and says A-5 on the box. Just wondering if this is what I need or if I need to go back. Thanks.

they are tapered bearings that sit on each side of the carrier.

The guy said something about the driveshaft? Dunno. You said on each side, so I assume I need a 2nd bearing?

There are 2 carrier bearings and like rocky said they go on each side of the carrier or differential. They are what the differential sits on in the rear axle housing. There is also a pinion bearing in the rear end as well.

The carrier bearing is also called a differential bearing and here is a link to it from autozone

If you are going to go with parts store bearings the timkens are good ones to go with.

the BCA number for carrier bearing is A-36. I had mine pressed on the carrier this morning
