what exactly is a temp switch?

my stock temp gauge doesnt work, so i changed the coolant temp sensor, that didnt help, so the guy at the parts place recomened a temp switch?
its in the front of the lower intake on the right side (if your standing in front of it) and looks like this....

will this do the trick?

The one wire sender on the lower intake (driver side) is for the gauge (and only the gauge).

The ECT is a multiwire sensor for the engine control. It's on the passenger side.

When buying such parts, note the above nomenclature (gauge = sender or sending unit. ECT = sensor).


I'd want confirmation that the item offered is indeed a sending unit for your gauge. A switch indicates an on/off item (for idiot lights, a fan, etc). I paid about $4.19 for a parts store gauge sender some years back.

I'm glad that worked out for ya.

I havent driven a car with an ammeter in about 15 years. One of the other 4 eyed gents will be able to help though. I much prefer voltage gauges (they're more in 'real time'). That doesnt help if you dont want to add a voltmeter or get tired of having yours read haywire (which is not uncommon from what I have read).
