This is my first Gen. 4 mustang and before i do any performance parts i was wondering what gears it came with. I was told 3.55s. But after driving it and my 87 and 90 that both have 3.73s i'm thinking that there is a bigger differance between the two gears bigger than i thought anyway. ive always heard that there was but didn't know that it was that big. But i'm thinking of 3.73s anyway.
Thanks

3.27 stock . I would like to stick some 355's or 373's in mine soon. The gears are really long and the engine loves to rev.

You would be wasting your time upgrading to 3.55 from your stock 3.27 rear gear. Most folks would also avoid 3.73s and instead opt for a 4.10 or 4.30. A few even opt for the 4.56 - but the vast majority will ditch the 3.27 for a 4.10 or 4.30. Run a few searches for "rear end," "gear ratio" and other keywords to see other threads that document all the reasons...

Go for a spin in a fellow 'stanger's 4.10 (or higher) geared car and you'll see why it's a solid option.

Your gas mileage isn't going to take a hit either, unless you do 99% of your driving on the highway....

I do both city/hwy driving with 4.30s (+ tune though) and so far noticed an avg of 1 mpg (sometimes more :D) less than stock. Basically from 18 (avg) to 16-17 mpg.

I like the driveability but sometimes wish that I went 4.10, especially at 80 mph (3000rpm). Ive also read that if I won the lottery and decided to install a supercharger, 4.30s are simply too low with that kind of hp. Can anyone add to that "myth"
