Straight forward question. Over the past two years ive learned a lot about NPI mustangs, but i was thinking about this today.....what gives 98s the extra 10 hp that they are rated at? is it advertising or something real? cuz my 96 could use those extra 10 ponies

I'm almost positive it was just a more aggressive tune from Ford.

It's the tune. The '98's program is closer to the '99 program. There are other minor differences too.
'98's had a completely random body panel use, as the decklids and hoods went from steel to fiberglass and back as parts were available.

The EEC Calibration was more aggressive in 98 than 96 - 97 and that is where the 10HP is.

I love being catless now! That was way too much restriction for me.

I've often wonder this too, and I would like to know how much politics had to do with it.

There is no real reason for the 4.6 to only make 215bhp except that by not producing more bhp than the previuos years 5.0 it was probably easier to sell the old models off so that Ford wasn't left with loads of unsold 5.0's.

If you found a 98 computer could you put it in a 96 and get the 10 hp?

My guess would be that because that's the year GM jumped closer to like 300+ HP and Ford didn't wanna be seen as having 100 less horsepower.

All that changed the performance was the Tune. Although Ford(or magazines?) originally claimed the new 2.5" tips had somthing to do with it.

Six cats???

I've had my '98 Vert for a few months... totally
stock and pampered by the previous owner.

What are the legalities of removing/modifying
the cats?

I had an old truck that I took in for a new
muffler. The guy at the shop didn't even want
to touch it because the previous owner had
removed the cat... and this is in Idaho where
we don't even have inspections!

97v6Silver

it came to $4.56 and i got $0.44 change from a 5,

Its not legal to run without cats unless your car is old enough for the law not to apply.

the 10hp gain came from "revised and cleaned up exhaust ports" I just read it out of a mustang book...I can scan and post it if anyone needs to see it..
