Yes there was an sohc version of the 427 but that was a special engine ford was trying to use in nascar aka 427 cammer.

I think it was the 429 or was is 428 were sohc. The Cammer motor was sohc

Neither only the 427.
 
Part of the width from the engine size increase in the 4.6 must also come from the fact that the stroke on a 4.6 liter is 3.54 inches and its only 3 inches on a 5.0 liter motor. I am guessing that this adds to the deck height in the 4.6 motor. But i am not engine builder. I agree now the rest of the width must be in the OHC design.
